Violence in prisons and jails arises as a result of little accountability for wardens, cultural disrespect between prisoners and staff, over-crowding, excessive solitary confinement, and insufficient staff training (Bookspan, 2017). Violent behaviors may be contributed by excessive force from police officers, gang violence, gang rape, and rape by officers and other prisoners.

Role of Probation and Parole

Probation and parole are the freedom that allows an offender to be released from prison after a short while or completely avoid prison. The role of probation and parole are to rehabilitate the criminals and accept them back into a community while reducing the chance of committing any offence (Amorim, 2013). Probation is given to the offender when the judge is convinced that the defendant is not a threat to society.
