Fremont jail is located in Canon City and comprises of detention facility houses for both male and females inmates who are sentenced to every type of crime such as felony and misdemeanor offenses. In this jail, newly incarcerated individuals are temporarily detained at the jail as they await bail and charges resolution ("Fremont County Jail: Bail, Visiting & Inmate Information," n.d.). California State prison, Los Angele County is operated by the state government. The prison is designed to hold male individuals convicted of any serious crime. The prison has an Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Service which offers a voice to crime victims ("California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC)," 2019). The comprehensive program is implemented to make sure the survivors and crime victims are given utmost respect to exercise their legal rights.
Culture of Prisons and Jail
At Fremont County jail, the inmates are housed based on classification. The house that a victim has can determine the type of crime, an inmate, is charged. Besides, one can tell the observed behaviors and crime history of an inmate while still in custody.
Cases of sexual assaults have been associated with the prison in the past. However, the jail has upheld and supports the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act to curb the risk of sexual assault in prison. For that reason, jail ensures that a health care practitioner is always available.
At California State Prison, Los Angeles, victims are offered rehabilitative programming to reduce the chances reoffending once they are freed. The Prison also offers the office of the ombudsman who addresses and resolves issues at confidential avenue ("California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC)," 2019). Ombudsman works with legal assistance, medical department, parole assistance, and transfer assistance (Bookspan, 2017). For those planning to visit a victim, the law requires them to complete a visiting application form.
Role of Jails and Prisons
Jails are used to address the idea of having secure detention at different points in a criminal justice system. In essence, jails are used to serve various law enforcement agencies in any given society such as federal authorities, wildlife conservation officers, state police, and local law enforcement (McConville, 2013). A jail holds children, men, and women including those suffering from drug addiction, alcoholism, and mental illness.
Community-Based Correction Program
Community-based correction programs are used to place the crime victim into a community to provide them with services. The offenders taken to serve the community are low-level criminals and non-violent. The concept of having a community-based program offers successful rehabilitation for the crime victim (Amorim, 2013). The idea also tries and provide rehabilitation to the offenders with the belief of them returning to a real world.
Violent Behaviors in Jails and Prison
Even though health standard are enhanced in Jails and prisons, there are inconsistent safety standards. Violence in prisons and jails arises as a result of little accountability for wardens, cultural disrespect between prisoners and staff, over-crowding, excessive solitary confinement, and insufficient staff training (Bookspan, 2017). Violent behaviors may be contributed by excessive force from police officers, gang violence, gang rape, and rape by officers and other prisoners.
Role of Probation and Parole
Probation and parole are the freedom that allows an offender to be released from prison after a short while or completely avoid prison. The role of probation and parole are to rehabilitate the criminals and accept them back into a community while reducing the chance of committing any offence (Amorim, 2013). Probation is given to the offender when the judge is convinced that the defendant is not a threat to society.
