A mentor is an individual or friend who takes the duty of guiding a person who is less experienced to build their trust and model them into having positive behavior (Ames et al., 2016). A good mentor always understands their role perfectly knowing that their primary function is still to be engaged, dependable, and authentic, and finally, they have to always know the needs of the person they are mentoring. When they understand the person they are mentoring properly, then assisting them will be easier since they will know what they like and do not like. There are instances where individuals are not near their mentor, but they envy what their mentor does and always want to be like them. For example, many young individuals want to be like Ronaldo, a great footballer but because they don’t have the opportunity to be near them they follow the footballer’s footsteps since they aspire to be like him. The only ones who will have the chance to meet him in person will be mentored.

Finding a mentor is not always easy since several individuals know the troubles they will undergo during the tiresome process of mentoring. Many people who own businesses will always dedicate their time plus effort to assisting new individuals in a place but do not want to mentor them to be who they are. It is because the mentoring process always consumes much time hence finding enough time to be with the mentees might not be there. Some of how one can locate a mentor is through, online mentorship, professional networking occasions, volunteer events, public locations, and even at industrial meetups. For instance, at volunteer events, one can have the opportunity to meet with the minded professionals who can assist one in becoming the great person they are aspiring to be. At these places, one will be able to come across retired wealthy people who are willing to give back to motivated young individuals aspiring to be great people in life. The mentor will take his time and guide them through the ups and downs that are present in what they want.

Finding a good mentor whom one clicks is not easy, but everyone always wishes that they have one whom they can cooperate with and guide him properly. For one to know that they have the right mentor for themselves then the mentors should have different qualities such as encouraging the mentee to move out of their comfort zone, mentors should always actively listening to what the mentee is telling them, the mentors should always be enthusiastic, they should value learning, how they answer their mentees is still essential, the respect they have for each other is also crucial, and finally, the mentors should always be experts in the field they are mentoring the mentees (Perry & Parikh, 2018). When the mentor has good qualities, then the mentee will know that they have the right person who will assist them.

The relationship between a mentor and a mentee is always meaningful since the two have to pass through a lot of circumstances. The association always entails commitment, hard work, and perseverance, and for them to be successful, they both have to work closely together (Gisbert-Trejo et al., 2019). Therefore, some of the excellent characteristics that mentors possess include, being flexible, nonjudgmental, successful in their careers, eager to learn new things, able to create time and devote themselves to helping the mentees, able to find resources to assist the mentees, honest to their mentees and they have to be knowledgeable.

Mentors have always helped many individuals achieve their goals (career or even academic goals) since they are the trusted advisers of this individual and the mentees still feel free to talk to them about any issue affecting them or even what they want since they are the role models of these individuals. They always support and encourage them by giving them suggestions and even knowledge (general plus specific) to guide them through the trouble time they might be experiencing. Still, the main goal is to help them advance their skills so that they can progress in their careers.
