1. What issues in this film do you see happening in your community?
The difference in the concept of public schools and the actual practice in running public schools. The film brings in a common trend in the majority of the government the sponsored schools, the theory and practice are parallel at per without much emphasize in ensuring students get the best. The actual perception in the community to regard public schools as the last result due to the economic status of the parents is common.
2. What did you learn from watching this film that you didn't know before?
The theme waiting for Superman brings in a new body of knowledge in the way the community and the government among other educationist gives an illusionary platform in the composition and running of public schools. In a real sense, they looked as if they were making incredible efforts to ensure successful implementation of policies in public schools.
3. What are some of the barriers to ensuring that all children in our community receive a high-quality education?
The main barrier to ensuring high-quality education is the imperative position assumed by the key stakeholders. Each custodian to facilitate the achievement of educational quality reluctantly blames others while in actual reality they are not doing what is expected of them. These trends of shifted blame game end in compromising the education quality in public schools.
4. What do you believe should be our priority when it comes to improving education in our state? Who is responsible for making that happen?
Improvement of education will require more action than talk as demonstrated in the film "Waiting for Superman" in the launch of the every child evaluation promise. The primary priority is changing the strategy applied by all stakeholders and changing everyone's perception of public schools from it being the last result of a priority for all.
5. What is the role of parents and parental involvement in improving public education? How can parents become more involved?
Parental active participation in the day-to-day activities in their children's schools especially in public schools is essential to the success of their children in education and also a positive element to improve school's learning environment. Parents' positive engagement in the provision of education in public schools act as feedback reference to evaluate systems and also support teachers and learners in the bid to enhance smooth running of the institutions
6. We all know effective teachers can make the greatest difference in a child's education. What steps/actions/strategies are necessary to attract and retain great teachers in our school?Teacher retention in public schools requires more active in improving their job satisfaction by catering for their working environment, motivational provisions, and showing confidence and trust in their role in the schools. The provision of the favorable working environment increases teachers' attachment and motivation with the institution, hence leading to job satisfaction translated in retention rate.
7. From a teacher's perspective, what specific kinds of supports and changes are needed to help teachers be as effective as possible regardless of where they teach?To increase teachers' effectiveness regardless of their working station requires that teachers embrace lifelong learning to ensure that they remain relevant to the current and changing profession by engaging in continued in-service training as life-long professional development strategies. Again, teachers need to shift their training grip from the technical training to specific skills-based training.
8. How can we all collaborate toward better outcomes for all young people?
Revolving the issues facing young people in life require a collaborative effort from the community, government, parents, and educationists to ensure that young people are exposed to the objective understanding of their role in bettering their our lives and destiny. Engaging young people in decision-making process gives them confidence in the system as they feel like custodians of change rather than imposing a change in them. Understanding the challenges they face and the false perceptions created in their developing minds requires positive mentorship.
10. How does delivery of student support outside the classroom connect with the film?
Support services provided outside the classroom setup play a significant role in personalizing learner-centered education experience. In the film, the difference between Anthony's support away from schools and the type of support Daisy receives gives the two children different levels of confidence in pursuing their potential
11. What role does the business community play in supporting play our public education system?
The business community engagement in education in public schools support in face lifting by partnering with the schools to improve the school's image, whenever the business community engage with the school in positive economic ventures they partner in providing a work-based relationship with effective mentors. They also provide financial advice and guidance to improve the funding and equipment of the school facilities.
