An article is a writing which is presented in a newsletter or a magazine. On the other hand, a journal is a common word used for materials presented together, for example, in a magazine that is published regularly either as online journals or printed journals. They cover various specific topics with thorough expertise, which offers in-depth information on the issues being addressed.
The topic of policing and race is one that I would like to review. Security refers to the state of one being secure or protected. Police are mandated with the task of ensuring that everyone feels safe and their property is protected. Recently, the USA government, under President Obama, sanctioned procedural justice to restore the trust between communities and the police. There is very minimal interaction between police and the public leading to the need for establishing the factors that might be making citizens have fewer interactions with the police. Some of the problems may be racial stereotyping and moral worthiness judgment among police officers. In many cases, the race of the suspect has affected how a police officer percepts the threat an individual has to security. Police need to understand the importance of exercising procedural justice when relating to a suspect.
The reason why I propose this topic is because there have been many cases of police threatening members of the public because they are from a different race. Studies reviewed have indicated that police are not so useful in ensuring that all members of the public are secure despite their gender, race, or religion. An example to support this is when the police stopped Eric Garner for selling untaxed individual cigarettes on the street of Staten island. During the arrest, the police put him in an illegal chokehold. It led to his death leading to mass demonstrations on the streets. In a report produced by the police, there was no mention of a chokehold. It indicates the levels of mistreatment that black men and women endure in the hands of police officers. For this reason, I find it necessary to talk about how people from specific races do not receive proper police protection and procedural justice as required by law.
Another reason why I propose this topic is because of the discrimination that black people face on the streets in the hands of the police. Many are times when black people are stopped and searched randomly on the streets by police. The police search for drugs and weapons that individuals may be carrying. However, these searches are discriminatory as black people, and minority groups are stopped more frequently compared to white people. This is even though more white people use drugs compared to minority groups. Also, black people are treated with disrespect when finding drugs on them, unlike white people, who are handled respectfully.
In many cases, black people are arrested at a higher rate than whites and given harsh out of court disposals. Studies show that the number of arrests for stop and search dropped by 52 percent for the whites but did not drop for the blacks. It makes police bias on blacks a particular case that needs reviewing.
By examining this literature, I want to gain more insight into why there are so many biases in policing when it comes to people from different races and minority groups. Through this study, I hope to come up with a solution that can help reduce the racial discrimination present in the police department. Every member of society deserves protection by the police regardless of their race or gender. I also want to gain more information on how the police who engage in such discriminatory behavior should be punished. This literature will also allow me to understand why there is so much police resistance to reform bias behavior. I also want to know why there is no political will to tackle the problem of racial disproportionality effectively. Through the review, I will identify the primary drivers to the disparities and the measures that can be put into place to reduce the issue of police bias. The act of criminalizing people based on their gender and race should be stopped as everyone deserves equal treatment in the hands of law enforcers.
