Introduction

Hockey is one of the sports activities which typically involves a number of two teams play against each other (Wongapiwatkul, Laosinchai & Panijpan, 2011). These teams play by manoeuvring a puck or a ball into the opponent's goal through the use of a hockey stick. Notably, there are a number of types of hockey sports, for instance, ice hockey, field hockey, bandy, and rink hockey (Wongapiwatkul et al., 2011). Thus, this paper intends to look at hockey as a leisure activity and the aspects of engaging in the activity, identifying a challenging problem, and describing three mathematical concepts or essential ideas involved or related to the problem. Secondly, the paper will address the question, "Where will I ever use this type of leisure or hoppy experience?"

The Challenge

Hockey is a sporting activity, just like any other sports. It involves playing against an opponent by navigating a small ball around towards your opponent's goal using the hockey stick (Wongapiwatkul et al., 2011). It is a game that must be played in a flat ground so that the ball can navigate around easily. Therefore running must be one of a player's hobbies because the game involves running around with the game. As much as hockey is a leisure activity; one of the challenging factors about it is the art of manoeuvring with the ball using the hockey stick (Wongapiwatkul et al., 2011). It can be challenging if one does not understand how to calculate angles well. Playing hockey has its requirements and rules that must be met at all times.

Hockey players are only allowed to hit the ball using the flat part of the hockey stick. The passing of the ball to ensure a score is done require one to apply a bit of mathematics so that you can target the right angle (Omundsen, 2014). In mathematics, angles and geometry concepts will help any hockey player. The second concept is about the calculation of length (Omundsen, 2014). A hockey player must calculate the length between the hockey puck and the target goal to be scored. The third concept is about numbers. According to Omundsen (2014), hockey is about numbers just like mathematics which every side must observe the rule of numbers for the players in the field.

The Solution

According to Misfeldt and Gjedde (2015), Geometry, length and numbers are mathematical concepts also applied in Hockey game. The use of a hockey stick to kick and move the ball around is similar to the use of legs to dribble football across the pitch. Players have to run around with the ball to score in the opponent's goal (Misfeldt & Gjedde, 2015). Hockey game requires speed and geometry. Scoring of goals is determined by one's speed and applying rules of geometry (Santos & Semana, 2015). This type of leisure can be applied in many ways. Hockey games can be played during school competitions, as part of leisure on ice or the knowledge can be applied in mathematical classes.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, hockey is a sporting activity, just like other games played using a hockey stick. It involves speed and calculation of angles to score. Hockey game applies mathematics concepts, for instance, geometry, speed, lengths, and so forth. Aside from just being a leisure activity that can be played during school games and other competitions, the knowledge can also be applied in classwork too.
