What is the overall research aim of your thesis? Please state in one sentence. What research question your thesis going to address. For example, a typical type of research aim would be: "Do non-auditory factors affect the level of noise complaints airports receive from residents?"
FORMTEXTWill Fully automated self-service passenger check-in systems influence Oman Muscat Airport?
3. Proposed thesis title
The title should be based on your aim. (based on the example above: "The influence of non-auditory factors on community response to aircraft noise".
FORMTEXTThe impact of Fully automated self-service check-in systems at Oman Muscat Airport.
4. Origin of thesis idea
With whom have you discussed your research ideas? (Which member of Cranfield faculty staff/managers or contacts in industry etc.)
FORMTEXTThe thesis idea has been discussed and will further be deliberated by the research supervisor after submitting the research proposal.
5. Research context
Please provide some background to the research aim. What problem/issue is your research looking to address? Why is the research necessary in this field? What related research have you found? Demonstrate how your research is going to contribute to the existing body of literature and knowledge.
FORMTEXTTravel experience remains far from perfect despite the heavy investments by airports as congestion, operational inefficiencies and delays can occur at any time. Passengers need to get to their destination within the shortest time possible, and airports are heavily investing in automation. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecasted that air travel demands will double in the coming two decades to approximately 8.2 billion in 2037(AeroTime Hub, 2019). This presents an increase in economic growth but also poses adverse challenges as fast growth will bring airports under strain to meet the increasing demands and thus push the air industry to innovate more to ensure delays are reduced and that they increase efficiency. Airports have been implementing self-service to meet the rising capacity. Halifax Stanfield International Airport has shifted to the complete automated self-service check-in system
in the Middle East; it is approximated by IATA that airline traffic will expand to 517 million travellers in the next 20 years and passenger traffic will grow at 5 % annually which translates to an extra 322 million passengers to and from the Middle East by 2036 (SITA, 2017). This implies that innovation at airports cannot be ignored as they will play a crucial role in managing rapid growth efficiently.
Research in this field is necessary to establish how other international airports are responding to the increasing traffic and what measures or innovation exist to ensure efficiency in the airline industry. This can be adopted by airports such as Muscat.
6. Research Objectives
In achieving your aim, there will be maybe 2 or 3 areas of investigation or work packages. Essentially your research investigation will involve components that will, in combination, deliver the research aim. Please list your research objectives.
FORMTEXT To establish how innovation (fully automated self-service check-in systems )will impact Oman Muscat airport
To explore the passenger experience after opening the new airport, Oman Muscat
7. Research Methodology
The methodology is really about what techniques, models, approaches are being used to meet each objective outlined above. For example, you could be using either one or a combination of the following: an empirical model to analyze secondary data, interviewing industry experts, sending out a questionnaire etc. Please explain briefly why you are using this methodology.
FORMTEXT The research methodology to be utilized in this research will be an empirical model where the secondary source will be identified and secondary data used in analyzing the trends in the airline industry for Oman Muscat industry. This method is chosen as it is easier in terms of cost and time and for the fact that the data is readily available even from the airline websites.
8. Data
What are your sources of data/information?
FORMTEXT Data will be collected from verified sources such as the Oman Muscat Airport website.
9. Data risks
Identify any risks that you can think of that are associated with data collection or access to data.
FORMTEXT Data from secondary sources may suffer from manipulation or bias, which could be a potential mislead to accurate results that the research aims to achieve. Further, data from some organizations may require authorization which could delay the research period.
10. Other comments
Please write down any other comments that you wish to make about your thesis proposal.
FORMTEXT The following thesis will seek to focus on the problem of airport challenges such as delays despite the investments in automation by several airports. Further, automation has its adverse effects such as loss of jobs to employees which outweighs the benefits of automation. As such, while the research aims to establish the impacts of automation in improving customer experience in the airline industry, the negative impacts will also be explored and alternative solutions, if any, identified. This will contribute to existing literature and knowledge.
