Introduction
Tourism is one of the significant sources of income for many countries of the world and continents, generally Europe being one of them. The continent has, over a long time, benefited from the revenue generated from the activities of tourism that have been taking place within many European countries. Therefore, it has seen the vast and rapid development of the European countries and cities in terms of economy, social life, and many other aspects. Tourism would have been better in major European cities were it not for the many challenges which make it hard for the activities of tourism to go on well and help the European cities to continue developing through the income and or revenue collected from tourism all across the many parts of the continent. The challenges which are a problem to sustainable tourism in these major cities of Europe are many thus can be resolved through coming up with lasting solutions that will enable tourism to become better in the cities. The purpose of this paper is to look at these challenges in chronological order as presented and discussed by several authors in their publications, where they went ahead to discuss how these challenges can be dealt with and create a better environment for tourism.
Literature Review
As aforementioned, the challenges of sustainable tourism in the major cities of Europe are several, and they include; insecurity of the tourists, extinction of the species of animals and other tourist attractors, inadequate infrastructure for easy mobility of the tourists as well as community clashes thus no peace for the tourism activities to run smoothly. For a better discussion of these challenges and how well they can be controlled, there are quite several authors of articles, magazines, books and other works who have described the difficulties in detail and some of them gone to the extent of discussing the possible solutions which can be employed by the major cities and Europe generally as a control measure for these existing problems. Some of the arguments about the issues affecting sustainable tourism in major European cities areas discussed by various authors in their publications below;
Goodwin, in his article published in the year 2017, majored on the challenge of over-tourism, and in it, he talked of how over-tourism has by itself become a problem to the field of tourism. Later in the article, he described the way this challenge of over-tourism can be managed, and he said that there is a need to have a responsible tourism partnership. Anything that goes well must have a specific limit so that it does not get to levels, which bring about adverse effects in the long run (Goodwin, 2017). Over-tourism is a problem in the cities of Europe because, at times, there is an exploitation of resources and also issues on how to manage a large number of tourists visiting every time. There should be tourism partnerships put in place to manage and control the tourism activities and get the load off these European cities by ensuring a sustainable tourism level that can be well managed.
Peterlin and Pranicevic also published an article describing a major problem that is affecting sustainable tourism in major European cities. The concern of these authors was on the issue of urban regeneration through information transfer and communication technology (Peterlin, 2016). Poor techniques used for the management of tourism data and information have created many problems in the tourism sector in Europe, with some people visiting the cities without following proper procedures, and this has been a risk to the towns. There is a need, therefore, to make sure that improved technologies are used in the management of tourism data and information at all times.
The other Webber, Stettler, Priskin, Rosenberg-Taufer, and others published an article about the pressure facing tourism destinations. In this, they described how the cities hosting these tourists are affected by a large number of tourists coming in (Weber et al., 2017). The concern which brings about the pressure is the fact that there are limited resources that cannot accommodate all these tourists well.
Eckert and Pechlaner, in 2019, published an article based on the development of alternative products as a strategy to enable sustainability in tourism. The monotony of the products which the tourists come to see in the European cities is as well a significant issue that is affecting tourism sustainability (Eckert, 2019). These authors suggested that products can be developed more and made readily available for the visiting tourists because this will attract them more and thus lead to the improvement of a better state of the tourism as the time goes by. In other words, they embraced the diversity of products as a way of solving the sustainability problem.
Insch in 2019 article described the challenges of sustainable tourism in the major European cities, and the focus was on the risks and responses to the dangers which are involved in tourism. There are so many risks facing the tourists in these cities, and these are things like sicknesses and severe weather conditions in some regions (Insch, 2019). The response to such risks will be apparent in a reduction of the level of tourists coming in in a particular season. Thus this will lead to a wavering situation in the tourism sector of Europe.
Zapata Campos and Hall in 2019 published an article about the transformative collaboration, knocking down taboos and challenging normative associations. According to them, restrictions of the regions and the negative normative associations are a challenge that is drawing the tourism sector back in terms of sustainability. This has led to a decrease in tourism levels hence a reduction in the levels of profits that could be realized through tourism (Zapata Campos, 2019). The best way to solve this and create room for sustainable tourism is to all the taboos of the European communities and cities knocked down and came up with an environment that is comfortable for everyone, and this will impact positively on the tourism sector.
Conclusion
In conclusion, European cities are good sites for tourist attraction, and they can enjoy significant incomes out of tourism. However, the challenges described above have been a threat to tourism. There are so many ways available to deal with each of the challenges described above, curbing the problems and realizing a sustainable tourism environment. Proper strategies and policies need to be put in place to control the tourism activities taking place in the major European cities. Anything that is negatively affecting the tourism sustainability needs to be worked on well seriously, and others have done away with to enhance tourism and help the towns manage the tourist activities well.
