The Family Violence Intervention Program was a life-changing experience for me. I have been a perpetrator of domestic violence for many years, and the trauma had affected my emotional and mental wellbeing as well as my self-esteem. Through the program, I was taken through psychotherapy to deal with past emotional wounds. I learned that domestic violence is not only unacceptable behavior but also criminal. It affects families from different orientations and various religious, age, economic, social, economic, and cultural lines. I also learned that persistent threats and violence easily become integrated into relationship patterns as one partner seeks to control the other or to enforce a particular behavior on the victim.
Typically, violence is used to force the victim into complying with what the perpetrator wants. Family violence is exacerbated by external factors such as stress, drug use, alcohol use, confrontations, or interpersonal conflict. Thus, the main objective of family violence is to create fear in the victim to control and dominate them. The primacy of the intervention program is to promote the safety of victims and to hold the perpetrators accountable for their behavior. Unlike other therapy programs, this intervention program addresses the motivating factors that perpetuate family violence and is initiated in communities that offer counseling, shelter, advocacy, and safe housing support for communities.
The program is, therefore, not a substitute for criminal liability, and it is not intended to discount the severity of domestic violence. The focus groups offer the opportunity for accountability and confrontation by decreasing the batterer's isolation. It emphasizes that battering is not a private affair but a community affair. As the accused person, the program has enlightened me on the severity of domestic violence, especially to the victims and measures to undertake to avoid further involvement in such issues. In other terms, the program has transformed me into a better person who understands and cares for other members of society regardless of their social, economic, or political affiliations.
Most often than not, any involvement in family and domestic violence is as a result of the inability to control emotions. By undertaking the family violence intervention program, I am now a changed person since I understand ways of managing my emotions and acting in a manner that accommodates other people's emotions and needs while solving issues at ease and with utmost humility for others. Further, the program has also shifted my perception of others by demonstrating the importance of allowing others to air their views and opinions not only in a family set up but also in every other setting. By listening to the distinct opinions, I now understand how to relate and interact with others while establishing a common ground that accommodates the needs of each individual.
Finally, the family intervention program has also been a life changer for me, considering its influence in sharpening my understanding of the family as a unit. The program makes it clear that each family has its strengths and weaknesses, and it can only thrive through its ability to address its challenges while establishing tools that could improve the family dynamics hence minimizing the frequent challenges. Overall, the family intervention program has been of much importance to me, considering its influence in instilling knowledge and skills in managing emotions and understanding the essence of peace in a family and society in general.
