The Giver is a story about the power of memory. Jonas uses memory to gain knowledge and understanding throughout the novel. He discovers the past and the emotions that were taken from him. Jonas also gains the ability to see the world in a different way and make his own choices and decisions. He learns that his society is not perfect, and in fact is controlled and oppressive.

Jonas can see the true nature and consequences of his choices by looking at the memories of his family. He can see the world from a different perspective and make informed decisions thanks to memory. Jonas, for example, realizes that the practice of releasing elderly people and people who are different than the majority is wrong. He has the confidence to take the courageous decision to leave his society to preserve the freedom and memories of his people.

The ability to remember is what ultimately allows Jonas freedom in The Giver. Jonas uses memory to gain knowledge and understanding and the ability to make his own choices and decisions. This freedom is vital because it allows Jonas the freedom to decide to leave his society and to protect the memories and freedoms of his people. The importance of memory is demonstrated in the Giver's ability to lead to understanding, and freedom.
