It was another early sunset on a rainy day in Washington. Ted was walking with his bag of groceries back to his apartment. Like all people in Washington, Ted had forgotten to carry his umbrella and only took a polyester jacket to wade off the raindrops. Deep in thoughts, Ted seemed to be regretting not taking an umbrella and not being environmentally friendly. His groceries were soaking, and I looked like they were slipping away from him. As he neared his apartments, Ted saw a young woman, at a distance, shivering, staring down and holding a card that read, "please help." Looking at the woman, thoughts ran in Ted's head. He tried t figure out where the woman would sleep, and how much the rain would affect her health. The sign, "please help" prompted Ted to think that the woman could be sick, or just depressed, or somewhat just homeless. Ted moved a few meters closer to the woman, and the feeling of wanting to help her grew deeper and stronger.

Ted moved to where the woman was and asked her if she needed any help. He asked her if she needed any help, but the woman kept staring down on the ground. Ted asked her if she needed some food, but still, she kept staring at her feet. Ted decided that since the woman was not raising her head to look at him, or rather give some response, trying to be personal without sounding desperate would work for him. He asked if everything was okay with her, and the woman raised her head a little bit, her eyes meeting those of Ted. In a voice that was ruffled, the girl said, "I am hungry, I think we can get some burger." Ted knew of a place that was down the blocks and offered to take her there.

As they walked down the streets in silence, Andrew asked the girl what kind of burger she liked. With a hesitant and shaky voice, and her eyes filled with guilt, the girl responded, "chicken, I love chicken." At the restaurant, Ted ordered a burger and sat with the girl at a table, looking at her while she ate it up in a hurry. After eating the burger, the girl said to Ted, reluctantly, "My girl is Emma." Not knowing what to say, Ted only told her that, "Emma indeed, was a nice name." as they walked out of the restaurant, Emma started speaking a bit more, saying that she had lost her guardians in a car crash when a drunk guy ran over her father. Her father was driving her mother to a hospital for a checkup when the drunk driver went through the red light.

Losing her parents and not having any close relatives, Emma had lost her parent's house to a mortgage and had nowhere to stay. Ted decided to offer her a place to stay. One of his friends, Maria, lived close to his apartments, he asked Emma if she would love to live with Maria as he figured how else to help, in the meantime. Emma was shocked; her face seemed to show confusion, amusement, excitement, and guilt at the same time. As Ted tried to reassure her, Emma's face looked down at the grass tears dripping down her cheeks.

Maria was a tall, polite and soft-spoken person. She told Emma to use anything she would love at the apartment. Emma smirked as she walked into the bathroom, with thoughts running in her mind like is this a smart thing to do? Well, she seems sweet, but who knows? After a few minutes, Emma came out of the bathroom and saw Ted sitting with Maria on the couch. The two laughed heartedly, and there was more food on the table. Maria said to Emma, "I think you can sleep on my bed since you are y guest, and after all, you have been through, you need a good rest." Emma's cheeks grew slightly red as she managed a "thank you" to both Ted and Maria.

Emma changed and went to bed as the rain continued to pour on top of the roof. The next day, Emma visited Ted to ask why he was so kind to her. Ted replied by saying that for him, it is heartbreaking to see homeless people in the cold and the rains, and when he saw Emma, he decided to help. Hearing these words from Ted, Emma gave him the warmest smile she had ever given, beyond her normal feeling of gratitude. In a barely audible voice, Ted told Emma that she was welcome.

In the days that followed, Emma shared the remaining parts of her stories. Her family consisted of immigrants from Iran, where the war had occurred, and they had fled the oppression. Although Emma's family was poor, her father had managed to get a job as a driver for a wealthy family in Washington, a position that provided enough money for their livelihood. Emma's mother had secured a job in a daycare. Emma insisted that for her, education was the primary focus, and in school, she had always obtained excellent grades. Emma's favorite color was blue, and she enjoyed listening to traditional Islamic music.

When Emma's parents had died, she had only graduated from high school and was scheduled to attend a University in New York. Her savings had been spent on burying her family. Ted did not know Emma's plan, but he thought that probably, he could talk to his parents about her problems and see if they would help. He did not want to help her look for a job like she had been doing in the past few months since Emma wanted to go back to school. Ted, being as kind as he s, decided to talk to his father. Ted's father was a wealthy politician who was running for a seat in the senate. Emma's story was published, and her University fees secured. Ted's parents adopted Emma to be one of their own.
