Introduction
Building information modelling is one of the latest innovations in building, constructing and structural engineering. The BIM would enable the designer, architects and building construction specialists improve their efficiency, quality and creativity thigh an intelligent 3D modelling application. The application can be used for planning, designing, contracting and managing building and infrastructures. However, with the adoption of the BIM technology, there would a lot of changes in the design processes that would affect the responsibilities of the architects and the engineers because the shared knowledge resources would provide a digital representation of all the facility's physical and fictional characteristic. Some of the duties carried out by other parties would be automated an in the process the life cycles of building and construction would be reduced
Role of architects
The job description of architects is to designs the buildings. Sometimes, they are tasked with making a cardboard model of the building. However, this role is slowly being replaced by the BIM. Architects would only have to draw the plans of the building and provide insight on the functional features of the proposed building. The architect works with the client to ensure that all the features required by the client are met in the design phase. Below is the list of roles played by the architect (Miller, 2009).
The aspects of duties played by the architect's ranges from design, documentation and construction.
At the design stage, the architect has to develop a detailed design of the concept provided by the client using ARCHICAD or the BIM. An architect must, therefore, combine technical knowledge and creativity.
The architect also ensure that even with the creativity, his plan is in compliances with the building and safety regulations, restriction and planning regulation set by the state
The architect is also charged with ensuring laws surrounding the environmental and historical artefacts preservation is met.
The architect also meet with the client regularly to establish requirements and review the design proposals (Franconia, 2011)
Architects design the building from the conception phase with the client requirement and description of the desired building
Liaises with the client toe building the client's imagined concepts to plans and can build a plastic or cardboard model for representational and analytic purposes.
The architect oversees the projects to ensure that the contractor uses the right materials, rations of materials, meet the design requirements.
The architect is also responsible for the public safety before, during and after the building is completed (Scott, 2012).
The architect must test the structural integrity of the building in the planning phase.
After the building is completed, the architect helps the client in ensuring that the initial client objectives and design expectation are met as the building continues evolving to incorporate the new concepts and shrouding.
The Roles of the Engineers
The building and construction engineer, on the other hand, is tasked with various duties from overseeing conducting detailed calculation to determine the weight bearing capacity of the proposed building
The engineer uses the parameter provided by the architecture. In the united states of America, bundling engineer is also referred to as the architectural engineer
The engineers oversee projects from planning, design, construction, operation and innovation as well as maintenance of the building.
They have to conduct the tests to ensure that the building has the least impact on the environment.
The civil engineering is responsible for the building structures from foundation to competition
The mechanical engineer may be involved in the building and construction to be responsible for ventilation, and air conditioning in the building. The electrical engineer would be tasked with overseeing the installation of power, power distribution, and control of all the electrical systems.
Use the physic in building sciences and construction lighting and accounting test as well as the indoor air quality test and recommend design changes.
Liaise with the constructor, and the architect to improve the structural quality and integrity of the building.
Review the architecture that the architectural form, function, building codes as well as other specification are met.
The future of architecture and engineering in the context of BIM
BIM has changed roles and duties of the architects and engineering throughout the projects life cycle:
In the conception phase, building information models. For example, it would help in managing building information models, as the virtual designs are stored in servers for future references. The BIM model, therefore, eliminates the paper plans with the virtual plans. Th virtual plans can be more detailed more than the paper plans
Secondly, the BIM would affect consecution management, as it requires the architectural and structural design to be coordinated.
BIM can enable the development and analysis of the pre-fabricated and pre-assembled parts that would be assembled on site. Modelling and prefabrication eliminate some roles of the architecture and engineer as the systems, assemblies and building sequences can be displayed on a relative scale.
BIM enables dynamics information building as the users can deploy the sensors measurement and other control signals in the projects from project inception to completion.
