The Rogue Lawyer is a legal thriller driven by the activities of an anti-hero. The Rogue Lawyers provides insights into the sometimes-underhanded way in which the defense attorneys carry out the client's work. The major theme in the novel is the true meaning of justice. The author focuses on the cynicism about lawyers and, by the extension of the whole judicial system.
The protagonist in the novel, Sebastian Rudd, practices as a criminal lawyer. Rudd fits the title of a rogue lawyer well as he accepts to handle all types of cases for clients, including the ones that other lawyers would not want to handle. In the process, Rudd has to encounter the disreputable side of the law, and he also finds himself participating in similar seedier activities to win client's cases (Section 1). The prosecutors and the police are even worse compared to Rudd. Rudd has to battle with the corrupt officers while seeking justice for his clients. The court officials are preoccupied more with having closure as opposed to the truth.
The occurrences in the novel unravel in an unnamed city. The anonymity of the city allows the author to depict a depressing picture of the questionable tactics used in law enforcement and the backroom politics involved in court cases. Rudd works from a customized and bulletproof van (Grishman Section 2). His previous office was firebombed. The only employee assisting Rudd is an armed driver whom he refers to by the name of a partner.
The text commences with Rudd representing a client by the name of Gardy and who appears guilty, but Rudd is convinced of the contrary. The client, a young teen, has been on the wrong side of the law in the more significant part of his life, and in the case, he is convicted of molesting and, by extension, the murder of two young girls (Section 1). Justice in the case is riddled by inappropriate actions on the part of the judge, prosecutor, and the guards try to rush the case so that they can quickly move to the next.
Rudd handles a variety of cases in the novel, some of which are a bit personal, while others are tragic. The author provides a smooth translation between stories by introducing the previous storylines in the upcoming tales (Section 2). Rudds appears in the novel in the first person, past tense, which allows the reader to figure out the events as they manifest in Rudd's head.
Each court case becomes a conflict between the client and the defense attorneys on one side and the court officials on the other side. The court game becomes a conflict where the desired outcome is winning as opposed to accessing justice. Rudd encounters challenges when ensuring that everyone is accorded a fair trial. The defense attorney is not immune to threats, blackmail, and extortion in the process of a client's representation. Importantly, he is not afraid to apply the same tactics used on him on his pursuers as he affirms, "I carry a gun, legally because my name and face tend to attract attention from the type of people who also carry guns" (Grishman Section 1 Line 4). In the interest of justice, Rudd bribes clerks, bend every law and even disobey orders. On the other hand, the key interest of the court officers to achieve a conviction as it is an easy way of stopping the proceedings. Rudd has gathered witnesses who can prove that the client was elsewhere at the time of the murder.
In depicting a real picture of departure from following the law in the process of seeking justice in a court of law, the author allows the protagonist to pursue different cases as opposed to one case as it is the case with most of the legal thrillers. The cases are independent though interconnected cases involving characters that other lawyers cannot touch makes the story captivating and believable. Other than the young teenager case, Rudd handles cases including one of the crime lords who is on the death law and another of a homeowner aligned with shooting allegations.
