Introduction
The video was given by Pattie Maes in the TED conference. She was unveiling one of her team's innovation works at MIT. As she explains, this innovation was driven by her desire to develop a form of sixth sense that could aid humans in obtaining some vital and relevant information about anything we come across in our lives, with the user needlessly not required to change their behavior. In this online show, she demonstrates how their developed system simplifies most of our life activities as human beings. She also explains the most fascinating aspects of the innovation. Additionally, she also expounds on the differences that exist between the system and the already developed systems that try to achieve the same purpose.
The device is a wearable and portable combination of several electronic devices that are designed and implemented by Pranav Mistry, a student of Pattie Maes at MIT. The device is a system combination of a simple web camera and a portable-battery-powered projector system (mirror and a projector), which is linked with a mobile phone device. A computation and communication device analyses information and relays them as required by whoever is operating it. Maes shows how the system tracks, analyzes and acts upon any gestures or actions done by the operator who is required to wear simple marker caps on the fingertips. The camera system allows the user to perform any form of action (even virtual actions taking pictures using fingers). The projector system then enables the operator to relay the information on any surface and perform any desirable action (could it be zooming and rearranging of pictures or even making calls without necessarily operating the phone)
Maes acknowledged that such systems have been developed before like Microsoft's surface table and mobile phones. Therefore, she demonstrated the differences and advantages of their invention when compared with the already developed ones. Pattie Maes explained that unlike Microsoft surface table, their innovation is highly portable and can interact with any surface that is conveniently available to the operator. Moreover, she elaborates on how their device would be much cheaper than the mobile phones when mass-produced. When finalized, Maes also assures everyone that the device will be much appealing than it is now during the unveiling.
The most appealing aspect of the device is its capability to provide Meta and seamless digital content of anything we interact with and analyzed individualized information without necessarily being needed to do research. This feature is essential in enabling all humans to make sound and optimal decisions in life. A shopper having specific preferences can use this device to obtain relevant information about products they intend to buy, therefore, getting the best possible return of the money they spend and at the same time fulfill their needs (Maes). Other life activities like reading newspapers, books and magazines can also be made more interesting by the system because it can provide relevant and quality references like video annotations, comments, and product ratings (Maes).
Conclusion
In conclusion, Maes's Innovation is an intriguing one that will help us visualize matters of our day-to-day life in a form that will resemble a sixth sense. It is a starting point for scientists and innovators to create a sixth sense of brain implants that will ease our way of living.
