Introduction
One action I did to build my strength and character after reading the sidebar is by avoiding buying sodas. Am a lover of sweet drinks and where every time I feel thirsty instead of buying water, I always go for sodas. Even though I have empathy over people that don't have anything to eat, my cravings usually drive me crazy whenever I pass through a store. As much as I never managed to stop buying sodas completely, I managed to reduce the number of bottles I drunk every day and put a little money aside for the hunger centre. What I did to achieve this was by telling myself that this small amount can make a child have at least two meals. After encouraging myself to do this, I came across a specific advertisement which was showing on the dangers of consuming too much carbonated sweet drinks.
The part that made me think twice was when I saw that sweet drinks make people fat. After seeing this, I decided to do more research to understand better. I discovered that not only do sodas make people gain weight, but can also make the kidneys to malfunction. I also thought that buying a soda while I was thirsty was good, but to my shock, I realized sodas dehydrate people. No wonder I drunk too many. The last thing that made me decided of quitting soda is when I understood that acids sodas wear out the dental enamel. The last thing I want now is to have regular visits to the dentist. After these discoveries, I decided that I would never drink sodas again and save money for hunger centers. I even thought to myself that at the age of 17 years, the last thing I want is to have a big body and also have regular visits to the hospital because of my teeth.
One pressure I had to endure was my friends. With our age most of us like sodas and to make matters worse, my friends are addicts of carbonated drinks. One day while we were hanging out, we came across a store, and one of my friends told us that we need to buy sodas to make our day worthwhile. When we were being asked the types we would like, I said I wanted water. My entire friends looked at me as if I was crazy, but I told them that sodas were not good. In a blink of an eye, everyone was asking if I was ok and where I got such a concept since they knew I was the most addicted one.
Before I could convince them, most of them were sipping their sodas. The pressure in our discussion was whether what I was telling them has ever happened to any one of us and my argument was that it builds in our bodies. I however endured and told them the facts why sodas were terrible. The good thing was that one of my friends had tooth problems and he was saying that he has weak teeth. This gave me the evidence I needed to show that he had tooth decay not because his teeth are soft, but it's because he consumes too many sweet things. To add on, I also told my friends that the acid in soda makes the dental enamel to wear out. Even though the discussion was not straightforward, most of my friends have stopped drinking sodas.
This experience made me makes firm choices not only by refraining from sodas but also how to spend my money wisely. I also learned that despite consuming carbonated drinks, there are healthy sweet drinks that one can consume. By enduring the transition, I learned that most of us make wrong choices because of lack of knowledge. After this realization, I promised myself to always share such information to anyone I come across taking sodas by also encouraging them to consume natural drinks.
