Introduction
Conflicts are inevitable in our societies. Disputes can be on the level of the workplace, and the family set up or between countries. A classic example of inter-country conflict is the United States of America and Mexico border crisis. President Trump commissioned the building of a wall on the southern border between Mexico and the United States. The intention of constructing this wall is to keep off the illegal immigrants crossing into the United States of America from Mexico (Lind, 2019). The conflict is causing what can best be described as a humanitarian crisis because families are broken while young children are subjected to harsh and inhumane conditions. Therefore, the situation is calling for an immediate resolution to avert it. Based on the gravity and the nature of the conflict, the best resolution method for this case is reconciliation and mediation (Rabi, 1994).
Perception of the Conflict
My understanding of the Mexico US border conflict has not changed. The humanitarian issues attached to it has a personal influence on me. The fact that families are separated coupled by the idea that children are subjected to poor conditions at the camp makes me oppose the attempt by the US government to construct a wall on the southern border of the two countries. Besides, the possibility of the wall achieving its objectives is very slim. The illegal immigrants from Mexico are not a security threat to America. It has been established that Native Americans tend to commit crime more than unlawful immigrants (Dick, 2019).
Moreover, the cost of constructing the wall itself is quite high. Therefore, it will negatively impact the American economy. Furthermore, the breaking of the law where those convicted takes almost five weeks before being arraigned in the courts is a concern (State of the Nation, 2019).
Furthermore, I have a personal connection with Mexicans based on my African origin. My ancestors suffered almost the same fate through slavery. The all thing is also discriminating because the American government is only strict and victimizes illegal immigrants from Mexico while they are lenient with the other immigrants from other countries, especially from Asia. All these reasons are behind my standing with my earlier perception regarding the conflict between America and Mexico (Khalidi, 2007).
Reconciliation of US and Mexico Over a Border Conflict
The southern wall between these countries is not only a cause of concern but also a severe conflict. It strains the relationship between Mexico and the United States. Furthermore, the decision to build a wall is affecting relations between these two countries. No one knows the extent to which this conflict can go. It is because it has the potential of scaling into violence. Therefore, there is a need for reconciliation between these two neighboring countries. Every country feels aggrieved because the United State think that Mexicans are illegally infiltrating into their country where they form a threat to their national security (Harro, 2010).
On the other hand, Mexico is also aggrieved because her citizens are subjected to inhuman conditions while in the United States. Besides, the Mexican citizens are even tortured by the fact that their friends and relatives are suffering in a foreign land. Therefore, the best way to resolve this issue is through a peaceful resolution by reconciliation. Through reconciliation, the two parties can potentially put their differences aside and sign a peace pact that will make them overlook their differences and coexist harmoniously. Moreover, through reconciliation, the two countries will be in a position of resolving the historical injustices that have been transpiring between them amicably (Adams, 2018).
My Role in Resolving the US and Mexico Conflict
As stated earlier, I am personally touched with the conflict that has been brought by the construction of the wall on the southern border. The battle itself is whether the wall should be built and whether there is a need for detaining illegal immigrants when arrested. Apart from experiencing a personal connection with the conflict, I also have a detailed understanding of the social and historical injustices that have existed between the two countries for a long time. Moreover, historically I feel connected with the conflict because being a black American my ancestors suffered a similar fate where they were enslaved. Therefore, I can play a role in ensuring that the conflict between these two neighboring countries is resolved as soon as possible (Rabi, 1994).
My first role is to sensitize people that the wall under construction will not succeed in resolving the problem of illegal immigrants. It is because illegal immigration will continue to happen even upon completion of the wall. The wall is just a physical barrier, but very many loopholes still exist that illegal immigrants can exploit to gain entry into our country. It is because some parts of the border will not be covered by the wall (Harro, 2010). Moreover, being a woman, I will sensitize people on the plight of women and children as a result of the newly implemented border protection policies (Dick, 2019).
Children are suffering and women subjected to intense trauma for being separated from their children. Moreover, I will also sensitize the American people to take note of the cost of constructing the wall. The price is very high, and it will negatively affect our economy while it is not guaranteed that it will help in curbing the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico. From all the above arguments, I am convinced that I will manage to convince the people to stand up and oppose these newly implemented border protection policies that are behind the conflict between these two countries (Rabi, 1994).
Apart from sensitizing and mobilizing the people, I will also reach out to our leaders both politicians and religious leaders to join hands and oppose the border protection policies that are causing humanitarian issues in our country. There exist politicians from both sides of republicans and democrats who are not happy with how the border issue is undertaken. I will take advantage of that to push for my agenda to bring the conflict to an end. Religious leaders are essential people in our society. They represent and speak on behalf of their followers (Khalidi, 2007).
Besides, no religion can support a government that exposes the people regardless of whether they are illegal immigrants to inhuman conditions. Furthermore, no religion can help a government that formulates laws and policies that separate and destroy families. I believe that when the American citizens, the political leaders, and religious leaders are united, the government will have no option but to spearhead the resolution of this conflict. Moreover, I can reach out for the human rights activists to stand up and be counted during this trying time. What is happening currently is a gross violation of human rights (Adams, 2018).
Therefore, the numerous human rights activists operating in all our states should join hands and push the government to bring to an end of this conflict that violates the rights of families to be together. One thing should be clear; I am not supporting illegal immigration to our country. The fact that they are illegal immigrants makes them be criminals. However, what I am opposing is the way the government is handling the issue. Even criminals have rights. Therefore, the government should uphold the rights of Mexican illegal immigrants (Bejarano, 2018).
Roles of Other Stakeholders in Resolving the Conflict
The stakeholders in this conflict are very many. The two governments are the primary stakeholders. They are directly involved, and they contribute immensely towards the existence of the conflict. Other stakeholders involved in the conflict include the international community, non-governmental organizations, the media, and illegal immigrants themselves. Each of the stakeholders has a role to play towards the resolution of the conflict. However, as stated earlier the two governments that are the government of Mexico, as well as the government of the United States of America, hold the key towards a speedy and a successful resolution of the conflict (Khalidi, 2007).
The two governments should first and foremost accept that conflict is existing between them. Moreover, they should also acknowledge that the conflict is negatively impacting their relationships together with their citizens. It is imperative to note that the two countries have mutual relations because each one of them needs the other. They are excellent trading partners, and America offers very many job opportunities to the Mexicans (Dick, 2019). Contrastingly, America is also benefiting from the workforce that Mexicans offer to their industries. Secondly, the two government if possible should sit down and negotiate with themselves by compromising on their earlier stances. The concept of cooperative interaction can help them to enhance their positions to a point where they reach a state of dynamism (Rabi, 1994).
Apart from the two governments, international communities through the United Nations should step in to help the two countries in resolving the conflict. The two countries are members of the United Nations. Therefore, much is expected of the United Nations to help them solve their disputes. The UN can achieve this by sending a delegation of mediation team to the two nations to help forge peace between them. Since the United States of America is the leading player in this conflict, the mediation team should seek to listen to her first as a way of uncovering the underlying reasons of her insistence of implementing their controversial border protection policies (Rabi, 1994).
After listening to their part of the story, the team should head to Mexico and hear their side. After successfully listening to the two parties differently, the mediation team should then bring the two countries to the table and assist them in overcoming their differences through compromising. The chances of UN succeeding in resolving the dispute is small. It is because history has it that the United States of America has defied the UN in the past. Despite being one of the essential members, the UN has very little influence on the United States of America. Therefore, United Nation cannot compel the US to involve in the mediation process (Bejarano, 2018).
The media too has a role to play in resolving the border dispute that exists between these two nations. The media is the eye of the public and the entire world. The media can either address or escalate the conflict. Therefore, the media should exercise responsible coverage of the events associated with the conflict (Adams, 2018). Moreover, media is a potent tool that can compel the governments of the two countries to come together to resolve their disputes. One of the media outlets that have fast influence is social media platforms. Other people across the world can join the citizens of the two countries through common social media platforms such as Twitter by the use of hashtags. Citizens can also directly interact and lobby the leaders involved to have a speedy resolution to the conflict (Khalidi, 2007).
Conclusion
The border dispute between the United States and Mexico is a true definition of a conflict. Illegal immigrants from Mexico are suffering in the hands of American immigration officials to the point that families are separated and children put in forced foster homes following the convictions of their parents. I do not approve of the idea of the construction of the border wall. However, I am to convict illegal immigrants but within the law. Moreover, since America is adamant in their quest of implementing their controversial bord...
