Introduction
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) shutdown is an emerging issue in the United States since the election of President Donald Trump. DACA is an immigration policy that protects all undocumented citizens in the United States. These immigrants came to the United States as children below 16 years and had no other place they call home. DACA policy was approved by President Barrack Obama, who stated that the law is not permanent and is bound to change (Cebulko & Silver, 2016). Since the election of President Trump, the DACA policy has faced threats of the shutdown, affecting children brought up in the United States. Pres. Trump has threatened to end the DACA policy, which has touched the lives of most dreamers, posing a threat to the United States economy as well as the lives of those affected.
DACA does not offer immigrants a path to United States citizenship. However, with the approval of Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals' approval, immigrants were able to come out of their hiding place. Notably, a social security number allowed immigrants to work and obtain formal employment in the United States. Besides, immigrants could get a driving license as well as empower them to go to school without fear of deportation (Knopf, 2017). However, it did not take long, when Pres. Trump took over office; the dreams of these immigrants were doomed.
Attorney Generals in the United States advised President Trump to call off DACA policies and deport all the dreamers back to their countries. To them, the immigrants were illegally in the United States, and the signing of the law was illegal. However, DACA is in the US constitution, but according to Pres. Trump, signing it to the law, was unlawful. He ascended to power with the promise of deporting the dreamers, which later became impossible due to court orders and resistance from different organizations and agencies.
In 2017, Pres. Trump revoked the request for DACA policy extension and called for the Department of Homeland Security to deport all immigrants under DACA policy to their respective mother countries. In his argument, Trump argued that Pres. Obama violated the US constitution by signing into law DACA policies (Knopf, 2017). Besides, Pres. Trump termed DACA policies as illegal, protecting illegal people. Notable, his government argued that these immigrants should not be allowed to stay in the United States and have no right to get services, either medical or protection in the US (Lauby, 2018). The decision by Pres. Moreover, the president ordered U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to reject all job applications by DACA participants (Knopf, 2017). Trump has attracted attention from several organizations, individuals, and departments who have strongly come up to condemn the shutdown.
Reasons Against DACA Revoking
To start with, church leaders have come out strongly to condemn actions by Pres. Trump to end DACA in the United States. According to these religious leaders, his actions are heart-breaking and unacceptable and also add that the actions do not reflect the real America. According to Knopf (2017), immigrants are already in strong social, political, and religious groups, which will end in case immigrants are deported. Also, they urge the president to treat immigrants as a human being and have them retained in the United States (Stone, 2017). They described his actions as evil and inhuman and called upon him to treat them with the little humanity left. In support of their predicaments, they allude that their forefathers were once strangers in a new land where they were welcomed and made it the United States of today (Cebulko 7 Silver, 2016). Moreover, they advocated for the review of DACA policies to have these children incorporated as US citizens as recognized as such.
Besides, many leaders have supported the detainment of illegal immigrants as long as they don't involve in any crime (Knopf, 2017). Immigrants' visions and dreams will be shattered. Most immigrants in the United States are pursuing high education (Harris $ Katz, 2018). They applied and are enrolled in their education system. Threats to have them deported create tension and become a challenge to have their education completion (Venegas et al. 2017). For most of them, the system of education in the US is what they are conversant with. Ending the policy and having them deported will make their education difficult due to the inability to adapt to new education systems in their countries of destination (Gleeson, Amp & Sampat, 2018). Therefore, the deportation of dreamers will kill their visions, and some will end up leading a helpless life.
In addition to leaving a hopeless life, crimes will increase in their country of destination. In case DACA policy is revoked, illegal immigrants after deportation with their dreams killed may opt to engage in unlawful activities such as murder, and stealing to earn a livingVenegas et al. 2017) (. Besides, others may choose to participate in terrorist acts as a revenge mission while aiming at providing for themselves and their families (Lauby, 2018). This not only poses a threat to the United States but also puts the lives of Americans in danger.
Others who opposed President Trump's action claimed that these children were brought up in the US and knew only English as their native language. Moreover, they did not choose to be in the United States as they were not in a position to make decisions. Besides, some immigrants lost their parents, and it is difficult for them to trace their country of originality (Knopf, 2017). Most of them have no other place they call home, other than the United States. DACA leaders call upon the president of the United States to have immigrants stay in the United States for their safety.
Moreover, most dreamers have stable families in the United States. Notably, some immigrants intermarried with the Americans making separation impossible (Uwemedimo, Monterrey & Linton, 2017). The deportation of such dreamers will have a negative social effect on their families. In most cases of broken families, children suffer the most. It is, therefore, essential to call off the deportation orders to ensure the future generation is protected.
Effects of DACA Shutdown
Out of the 770,000 immigrants in the United States, only 40% is estimated to be students in learning institutions. However, most people are in booming business activities contributing positively to the economy of the United States (Stone, 2017). They contribute to 4.5% of the Gross Domestic Product. Besides, they also contribute to revenue creation in the United States. Other business people create employment for most people in the United States, thus improving their standards of living (Knopf, 2017). Their importation means a fall in Gross Domestic product as well as revenue in the States. Besides, it means that development as a result of such business organizations will be affected in the US (Lauby, 2018). Also, deportation implies that most people will be jobless as their source of income is disrupted. Poverty and poor economic status will be experienced in some parts of the United States.
Moreover, the health status of immigrants is affected. Many people are suffering from stress and depression in the foreign land. The thoughts of them being deported to unknown places scare them (Lauby, 2018). When the president threated to revoke DACA policies, most young people were shocked and depressed, not knowing the way forward. They suffered health problems that require medical attention immediately (Getrich et al. 2019). However, the president considered them illegal and cannot access medical services, thus endangering their lives. Most result in suicide, while others were becoming mentally unstable. Therefore, revoking DACA policies is putting the health of those affected at stake.
In addition to most immigrants in the United States offer quality services to the people of the region. Some dreams are doctors, teachers, and nurses. They provide services in hospitals and schools to both Americans and other immigrants (Venegas et al. 2017). Their deportation means the reduction of people offering services, which might result in the inadequacy of personnel. Besides, others hold top positions in the government offices, which will affect the economy as well as critical decision making in the United States (Lauby, 2018). In some cases, immigrants have specialized in service delivery in specific fields, which will be affected in case deportation orders are implemented. With the removal of DACA, a shortage of qualified personnel, especially in rural areas, could worsen.
Additionally, close to 30,000 dreamers under DACA are working as a teacher in schools and colleges around California and Texas. In case the program is ended, United States risk losing all those teachers leaving the schools in limbo. Besides, most dreamers are also fluent in France and Spanish, with excellent communication skills valuable in different fields and organizations (Lauby, 2018). Also, the privacy of the immigrants will be violated. When the application was made to get to the United States, critical personal information was provided. The same information will be used by the government to trace immigrants for deportation purposes in case DACA policies are revoked. This will be a violation of human rights concerning the protection of individuals' privacy as laid out in the constitution (Gleeson et al. 2018). The trust of the government will be dead. The US government risks losing more critical information in the hands of hackers who may get an opportunity to manipulate the immigrants.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security risks losing their jobs in case the DACA program is ended. Those employed in such offices will be jobless when the shutdown occurs (Lauby, 2018). Losing jobs means poor economic status as well as increased levels of poverty in the region. The income in the US will drop significantly following the shutdown. Offices likely to be affected include Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services, which handles request cases for assistance as well as Custom and Border Protection, which manages the application of immigrants (Stone, 2017). Besides, economic impacts will also affect those who offer services to the dreamers. All immigrants are spending money and participating in the growing economy of the US. They buy groceries, pay rent as well as fueling their vehicles; once this program ends, they will potentially lose their jobs. Thus, missing a considerable number of people at once will impact the economy of the United States negatively and especially in areas where dreamers are settled.
In addition to the loss of jobs, health effects, and other challenges that comes with ending the DACA program, the country also will waste resources in case the plan is implemented. A lot of finances and other resources will be wasted when transporting the people to their motherland (Stone, 2017). Moreover, a lot of time will be used to do the deportation, which will end up delaying other essential activities. The resources used for eviction can be put into proper use for development purposes. Putting resources into proper use will boost the economy of the region, thus ensuring that the GDP of the US is continuously growing.
Besides, DACA participants are said to play a significant role when it comes to critical political decisions. Most dreams are excellent political analysts who play a vital role in making political decisions. Also, 80% of most dreamers are registered voters in the United States. Their deportation means a reduced population and low voter turnout in the region. Thus, there is a need for Lawful Permanent Residents to be implemented to ensure these dre...
