Introduction
Aerospace engineering is a field that deals with the design, construction, and operation of machines that fly (Lucas, 2014). The machines vary from jets, aircraft, satellites, spacecraft, and drones. Aerospace engineering is divided into two broad categories aeronautical and astronautical engineering (Lucas, 2014). Aeronautical engineering involves the design of aircraft, jets, and helicopters. Astronautical engineering, on the other hand, focuses on spacecraft (Lucas, 2014). The world is at an age where technology is developing at a fast rate, and aeronautical engineering is a field of engineering that is of vital importance. Aeronautical engineering is essential in transportation, military, space exploration, and agriculture with flying machines used to improve these fields.
To start with aerospace engineering is vital in the military. The military makes use of a variety of specialised aircraft in conducting its operations. The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a stealth aircraft used by the military that is not detected by Radar which enables them to launch surprise attacks (Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, 2018). It is the role of aeronautical engineering to design such aircraft that enable the military to be efficient in protecting countries from attack and also launching attacks on enemy territory. The military, as well as police departments, are also fast embracing the use of drones. Drones technically known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used by the military to conduct surveillance and provide real-time imagery of an area through a camera attached to the vehicle. Drones thus enable the military and the police to conduct surveillance and provide intelligence to enable them to launch a planned attack. Aeronautical engineering is therefore important in ensuring the security of the world by empowering the military through the provision of specialized aircraft and drones that drastically improve their operations.
Aeronautical engineering is also important in space exploration. For a long time engineers and scientists have been attracted to space to conduct tests and studies with several spacecraft launched successfully. The Challenger disaster shows show how vital aeronautical engineering is and the small error margins involved. To successfully launch a spacecraft it takes a competent team that pays attention to the tiniest of details. The Chief Executive Officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk is intent on colonising Mars (Shaban, 2018). SpaceX led by Musk is planning to launch a cargo mission to Mars in 2022 (Shaban, 2018). The vessel is designed and constructed by aeronautical engineers is called Starship. These space explorations are designed to enable human beings to inhabit Mars and make discoveries which will steer Science to new dimensions.
Finally, satellites have been one of the most important inventions of aeronautical engineering. Aeronautical engineering has enabled organisations, and countries to launch satellites that are used across several fields. Satellites revolve around the earth and provide imagery at different resolutions (Mining and Satellite Imagery, 2017). The images from satellites are used in mapping by surveyors especially in areas where traditional methods are disadvantaged. The maps developed are in turn used in agriculture, military, and planning. Satellite imagery is also used in remote sensing where minerals are discovered through the analysis of imagery (Mining and Satellite Imagery, 2017). Aeronautical engineering is at the heart of these inventions through the design, development, and launching of satellites that are used across several professions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, aeronautical engineering is an important field that has helped various departments to improve their operations. The military is empowered by aeronautical engineering through the provision of special aircraft and drones. Space exploration has also advanced due to advancement in aeronautical engineering with SpaceX set to colonise Mars. Satellites are also great additions that have enabled mapping through the provision of satellite imagery. Aeronautical engineering is helping steer the society forward through new inventions that have improved the quality of life.
