Introduction
This specific text is a summary of the above-named article authored by Donohue. The article is based on concepts of high technology and consumer privacy while referencing the United States of America National Security. It is worth noting that consumer privacy should be protected from reaching wrong hands. On the other hand, the threat that exists is that the use of high tech is a compromise to consumer privacy. The article has touched on an activity where an investigation was carried out and it was found out that the United States High technology companies have an impact on the US corporations, US National Security, and the US economy in general. The information on how high technology has an impact in the US was contained in documents that were printed in June 2013. More encounters on the issue of high technology companies and the state have been stated in the article, as well as showing how and why conflicts on the basis of law arose in between the state and high technology companies.
Conflicts Between NSA Programs and the High Tech Companies
One of the incidents that have been identified by the article is on the conflict that took place in between NSA and the company by the name Verizon. NSA had ordered Verizon to turn over telephony metadata basing its argument on the USA Patriot Act of 2015 (Donohue, 2015). The matter was taken over by The Guardian which published that NSA had intercepted international content Act. NSA had thriven in receipt of data shared by individuals (Donohue, 2015). The activity affected companies such as Apple, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Paltalk, Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google.
The conflict between NSA and the high technology companies continued and the dailies in the US reported that NSA had obtained millions of clients' data without the consent of the companies involved. In addition to this, there were claims that NSA had gone ahead in bypassing the encryption of the companies and intercepting data when it is being transferred Google Cloud and the public internet (Donohue, 2015). Basically, the point here is that NSA was determined in doing whatever possible to infringe into the customers' data being possessed by the high tech companies in the United States of America.
NSA Programs Impact on Economy
The NSA programs had much impact on the United States of America Economy, mainly the areas of revenues generated on the basis of cloud computing and US trade agreements. In details, the programs made the high technology companies in the United States to experience cost in terms of sales as their market share declined. In response to this, the American multinationals were obliged to develop new programs and products in order to offset the revelations and to rebuild consumer confidence (Donohue, 2015). In addition to this, the strategy by NSA to penetrate foreign data flows had an effect of undermining the U.S trade agreement negotiations. The result of this has been data localization being spurred all around the world.
Another impact of the NSA programs was the decline of the market share and loss of revenues. In connection to this, the article has clearly stated that half of worldwide cloud computing revenues is obtained from the United States of America. The acts of leaks by NSA caused many of the companies to lose billions which were not the case before the leaks were conducted. After the incidents of NSA took place, it was reported that British and Canadian based businesses were moving their data outside the United States (Donohue, 2015). It did not only affect the revenues of cloud computing but it had extended to companies such as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM that do not rely much on cloud computing.
Economic Security as National Security
The approaches of NSA on the move of obtaining data from high technology companies that resulted to the conflicts and adverse, it's an indicator that lawmakers had failed in recognizing the grade to which the economy strong point is essential to state safekeeping. They also failed to identify the significance of high tech business to the economy of the United States of America. The idea of national security is not a new thing in the United States and it was affected by the government actions though NSA programs (Donohue, 2015). The effect of the leaks resulted in driving depraved players to pursue non- US companies for ISP facilities. In this way, gasp has been created as they carry out the actions. More dangerously, the NSA programs undermined the US national security in a number of ways that compromises the US economy.
National Security Definition and the State of High Tech Companies in the United States
In reference to the US code, national security is limited to the consideration of foreign affairs as well as the military strength maters. In details, the term national security has been termed as that which is involved in the national defense as well as the foreign connections of the US. The problem of this definition is on the fact that it lacks a statement of the provision of security to the United State economy. Even though this was the case, it is fact that the founders of the definition clearly knew the importance of fostering the importance of the economy.
In reference to the US economy, high technology is central as per the study by the Bay Economic Council Institute. The business has been growing fast and attracting many clients in demand for new services and products. It has also employed many people than in the case of the private sector. There are many types of jobs based on high technology while the global market for high-technology goods is experiencing fast growth.
National Security Infrastructure
The national security infrastructure includes the National Security Council (NSC) that deals with national security policy issues. NSC consists of the president, commerce administrator and the secretary of the reserves. The chair of the entity is the president. The point to note concerning NSC is that it does not put emphasis on non-international economic issues. In addition to this case, there is no contemplation of the inclusion of commerce or treasury as an operational matter. Moreover, concerns on the economy are treated with significance, but they are stressed into the state safety infrastructure.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the NSA program went beyond the weakening of the US economy as there was a failure in identifying the potential impact of public knowledge. In order to address the current situations, the legislators have to curb NSA's authorities as stated in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. One of the strategies that should be implemented is ending the telephony metadata collection program and ensuring that collections of the upstream are intercepted. Another way the legislators should do is making the private controls stricter. The legislators could also make long term relations to the national security infrastructure. This being the case, it is important for the government of the United States to make sure that high technology is controlled to have tampered with consumer privacy.
