Introduction
Work and occupation are often misconstrued as a positive aspect of the American economy. However, it is a major contemporary problem when the issue of gender inequality, racial discrimination, and gender-based vices emerge. Gender inequality is seen when the decision making and enactment of human resources policies seem to favor a specific gender over the other. For example, women are not granted promotion based on their experience and education in equal measure as their male counterparts. Gender-based roles emerge when women are assigned roles based on their sex, in the society, they are assigned household roles and men work to fend for their families. Racial discrimination emerges when blacks are not treated equally as the whites in workplace settings and American society. As a solution, firms should not be allowed to hire more females since they can pay them less than men, and men should not be turned down for jobs since they will have to be paid more than a considerably skilled woman. The issue of workplace and occupation inequality is a growing concern in American society that needs to be addressed.
There is a need for equality of all people in the United States when it comes to work and occupation. The government should ensure there is equal pay for both Americans and immigrants. If immigrants receive equal pay as the whites, they will augment the long-run economy through hard work, and entrepreneurship. Immigrants will at the same time create employment, which is likely to transform the economy of the U.S. Hence there should be a scheme that would actually reduce the wage gap, and solve a myriad of other problems face globally. Businesses should also create equal opportunities for both African Americans, and Whites in the United States. If given equal opportunities they will engage more in political positions such as David Peterson-current governor of New York, and Deval Patrick of Massachusetts. They will impact the society positively such as "Oluwatoyin Ayanfondin" who gives voice to the marginalized black students through his Tomorrow's Leaders NYC in New York (Trahant n.p).
There are enormous benefits to different groups of people in the U.S. upon addressing the societal issue, that is, benefit for all. A solution to the demeaning work conditions is a benefit to small American business owners who face oppression from monopolistic competitors (Landsberg n.p). Consequently, Immigrants who aspire to get jobs in the U.S. will benefit from the solution since there will be an increase in their social standing in society (Mahony 464). On the same hand, addressing problems experienced at the textile industries, teaching, nursing, domestic work among others will benefit women who have limited choices. There is also inequality in the workplace where women are paid less as compared to men, addressing this is an advantage to women who are perceived as breadwinners in contemporary society. African Americans are another group that will benefit from the proposed solution. They have limitations in their work and occupation, for instance, in the South, most of them are small landowners, sharecroppers, and others work in industrial jobs such as forestry and mining. Despite the fact that they have skills, many perform unskilled labor tasks such as domestic servants.
There has been a debate about the stunning structural shift of the U.S. economy (Landsberg n.p). Monopolistic business opposes the proposed view by saying that they are productive and more efficient as compared to small business owners. They assert that their accumulative ranks are economically beneficial to not only the U.S. economy but also to the people. Other people who object the proposal that immigrants who aspire to get jobs in the U.S. will benefit say that there will be an increase of immigrant population in the U.S. The argument is true since there are new immigrant arrivals who are currently in the United States in search for employment and better occupations. They are likely to pose a threat to future U.S. employment since the Americans will be competing for the same number of few jobs available. American citizens avow that immigrants burden the country by taking away jobs. The white Americans have a perception that they will not hold similar trajectories as African Americans at the workplace. Gender bias, discrimination, and inequality in work and occupation is a problem that belongs to the Africans Americans (Landsberg n.p). There is an inevitable product of racism, where the whites believe that African Americans are more likely to live in poverty levels. Moreover, they denote that work and occupation depend on the level of education. Since African Americans are less educated, they are given low paying jobs and at the same time even if they are educated, they do not have predominant skills as their white counterparts.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the issue of work and occupation is a contemporary problem in American society. Gender inequality emerges of earnings, promotion, and roles assigned seem to favor a specific gender over the other. The solutions would be restricting firms from hiring more women only because they are paid less than men. Another solution would be allowing males to indulge in gender studies so that they make less money, and it will assist in closing the gender gap in workplace and occupation.
