I dealt with a client in crisis for the first time while working in a public disability service. One of my caseloads, a middle-aged lady, called me, claiming that she felt worthless and saw nothing but health complications in her future. Considering her previous depression history, I prioritized her safety and hurried to offer help in her apartment. Using my active listening skills, goal setting, and reframing, I was able to revive her hope and make changes in life. I felt the achievement in utilizing skills developed during my study in psychology. This is one of the experiences that I have grown as a social worker and a student, which have strengthened my persuasion that a career in facilitating mental health with the psychological therapy, the counseling career, is a career that suits me.
I have always been absorbed by human behavior patterns and relished engaging in spirited discussions that bring a positive change in a person's behavior and way of thinking. As a psychology student, I learned human functioning. I was interested in learning numerous areas of psychology, but my attention grew on the application, which is the utilization of psychology to improve people's way of life. I developed an interest in mental health through my psychology study, and study of the Chinese language and literature. The amalgamation of the two tributaries, along with an opportunity at an aboriginal student population emphasized the importance of culture in human functioning. In the Mental Health Counseling Program, I would like to implement my interest in culture through investigative progressions and improvement with diverse therapy techniques.
In the course of attaining my undergraduate degree and internship, I developed skills in conducting psychological research. I offered help in two research laboratories where I independently established a research proposal that fitted my internship interests and accomplished an original study in conjunction with a team of few intern class peers and our professor. Our team was honored to present the study in the school's psychology research conference. Producing scientifically sound work that utilizes the present body of literature, input from overseers and aristocrats, and my ideas are one of my commitments. After studying the profiles of some researchers in Education Psychology Department, I explored studies on multicultural counseling competence and the effectiveness of psychologists, which improved my intellect on cultural interrelation.
Completion of this program is a bridge of attaining my goal of becoming a Mental Health Counselor. I anticipate completing a doctoral program in counseling after my masters. After that, I can picture developing my profession in diverse environments such as mental health hospitals. Since I am interested in continuing my work in children, youths, and adult populations, diversity in clients is an essential area of specialization in multicultural techniques. Through the experience in working with diverse cultures from these groups, I have learned that children are in the danger of suffering from mental disorders as much as adults are, regardless of ethnicity, or social status. However, my limited association with different cultures may cause difficulty in learning how to associate with various cultures effectively. I anticipate learning through the study of various cultural backgrounds to enhance my competence as a cultural diverse professional. Therefore my practice as a counseling psychologist shall be characterized by reflecting on the contemporary best practice literature, personal work, and the training I receive throughout the training program.
