The United Kingdom is on the road to attaining sustainable economic growth. In this case, the aviation industry is needed to play its role into completion on this goal. In the UK transport system, aviation is a very crucial element and this can be linked to the complex public views regarding the sector's efforts in environmental and economic sustainability. In this report, the UK aviation industry policies that promote sustainability will be outlined. The companies of interest in this paper are the KLM Engineering Limited and Boeing aerospace company. The strategic approaches of both companies in the quest of ensuring sustainability are addressed in herein. This paper seeks to understand the strategies that the aviation companies in the UK have according to the Corporate Social Responsibility reports. This paper will provide the KLM and Boeing's CSR policies as well as a discussion of the current programs. Nevertheless, the report also seeks to unearth the actual or potential business risks and challenges facing the companies in their engagement in sustainability. Regardless of the value that aviation companies bring to the public, people still worry about the industry's environmental impacts.
Background Also known as corporate citizenship, Corporate Social Responsibility is an obligation that a company has to adhere to its policies in their quest to voluntary efforts in sustainability (Freeman & Hasnaoui, 2014, p. 719). According to Schwartz (2017, p.14), a company has to make decisions that are desirable to the public in terms of values and objectives. Schrempf-Stirling, Palazzo, and Phillips (2016, p.700) claim that the definition of CSR has been detracted and added since 1953. However, the many articles published regarding the subject matter still see CSR as an organization's responsibility in the betterment of the society (Schwartz, 2017).
Since the commercial airliner went into service, the global demand for aviation services has gone up (Henriksen & Ponte, 2018). This implies that the level of environmental concern also went up accordingly (Visser, 2015, p. 9). As global tourism and consumption of international goods and services continue to rise, the Corporate Social Responsibility of the aviation industry will always be centered on ensuring a sustainable environment (Ruggie, 2017). However, inadequate research has been done on the UK airliners industries as well as the aviation companies. Research by Whitelegg and Cambridge (2014) regarding aviation and sustainability only focuses on regional growth, demand driver variables, the impact of aircraft emissions, and demand management.
The limitation of this research is the fact that the information required for the CSR analysis is obtained from CSR reports of the two companies. However, adequate information will be obtained through intensive literature review and discursive approach to the issue of sustainability in the aviation industry based on the UK's KML Engineering limited and Boeing companies.
FindingsKML Engineering Limited KML Limited aviation company envisions a future that is innovative, caring and responsible. In this case, the company publishes its CSR reports, footprints of their policies, financial results, CRS approach, and CRS strategies. All these reports are published online on the official company website and on corporates citizenship periodic reports. Furthermore, the company has a newsroom and press releases through which it communicates its commitments to the society (The KML Company, 2017). Since 2005, the KML company has been releasing reports annually. According to the company's website publications, there are two types of publications done every year; public report and annual report (The KML Company, 2017).
The Boeing Company To maintain the relationships between stakeholders, the Boeing company ensures that periodical reports are released every year just like the KML company (Boeing, 2019). Reports regarding the company's footprints in the carbon emission and environmental sustainability are posted on the company's website. Through frontiers- a monthly magazine and Aero- a quarterly magazine relays information regarding the company's goals and objectives (Boeing UK, 2018). Through the publications, the company communicates its CSR strategy and achievements experienced so far (Boeing UK, 2018). Feedback from society is collected through response lines and forums held by the company after a certain period of time.
Discussion KLM Engineering Limited company maintains an extensive Corporate Social Responsibility policy Dur (Durmaz, et al., 2011, p. 1421). The company has an ambition of remaining at the top of aviation companies via high standards as stipulated in their CSR. The company is a global business enterprise and with many other firms in varied countries, it vows to assume the obligations and work towards reconciliation of local growth, social value, and protection of the environment (Bolton, et al., 2015, p. 63). Moreover, the KLM aviation company's vision is "to be the best aircraft maintenance company providing superior solutions for our customers" (KLM, 2019). The company is a part of the Air France-KLM and it follows the sustainability policies stipulated by the group CSR. On the other hand, Boeing has vowed to commit to its responsibilities in all the activities that it undertakes. In communicating their policies, the company has a well-structured website which works as a guideline for people who want to know its responsibilities in the society (Hadjimanolis, 2017).
CSR Approach Every company needs to have a properly reviewed approach to CSR so as to ensure the possibilities of achieving or sticking to the policies (Frederick, 2017, p. 129). Looking at the Boeing's website, the company has divided its CSR into sections and explained every section. On the website, the sections which are of interest to this research are the environment, health and safety sections which are meant to outline the company's policies. According to the environment report compiled by the company, its commitment to ensuring sustainability is made possible by the use of energy efficient products and services. These products are meant to reduce the impact of community noise, emissions, and reduced use of fuel (Boeing, 2018). Furthermore, the company has taken a new approach to its CSR which involves the release of periodical reports about the company's progress in its environmental policies. This new initiative is a step closer to eliminating the challenges that the company faces in attaining its CSR goals (Millon, 2011, p. 530). Additionally, Stakeholders engagement in the policy-making process and CSR strategy plays a significant role in achieving the objectives of the company. According to Henriksen and Ponte (2018, p.23), stakeholders in the aviation industry are the people that can significantly impact the company's development and implementation on its strategies as well as airline activities.
On the contrary, KLM Engineering Limited bases its CSR approach on its global group culture and stakeholders. According to the CSR report by the Air France-KLM, the companies identify and engage with is stakeholders all the time. Staff suggestions and perceptions are collected through internal events and barometers. In return, the collected data is used to make improvements in the CSR policy approach. Moreover, customer surveys and perceptions are monitored through dialogue and website feedbacks (KLM, 2014, p. 12).
