Since the outbreak of covid 19, wearing of masks has been crucial in preventing the spread of the pandemic. Many people have been defiant over wearing masks, while others claim that wearing masks is an infringement to the right of freedom of choice. Wearing masks has become a huge case of controversy in New York, and it has even become a political issue. While people are still encouraged to wear masks, in New York, there has been a backlash from people who do not want to wear masks for political reasons.
According to polls, many Americans wear masks while out in public as a preventive measure. However, whether local government or businesses should make it mandatory to wear masks has been made a divisive political issue. Another dramatic finding was seen in a recent poll, which showed that compared to Republicans’ democrats are likely to say that they wear masks. These findings were in line with how the leaders have been communicating. Democratic leaders have been pro-face-masks, making it mandatory to wear face masks in public. The Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, even said that he would make it compulsory for everyone to wear face masks if he was in the White House.
In contrast, Republicans have spoken out about the importance of wearing face masks, but they have been reluctant to make masks a mandatory requirement. Amid the reopening phases of Republicans' states, we have seen new surges of infections, but they are still hesitant. The most obvious example is Donald Trump. Trump said that wearing masks was not mandatory, and everyone is free to choose whether or not to wear a mask. Trump refused to wear a mask influencing his followers not to wear masks. He even suggested that wearing masks was a statement of political mockery directed towards him. Trump also goes ahead to mock Biden for wearing a mask.
As a result of these political affiliations and politicking on wearing masks, people the public has turned the masks into a culture war. Some businesses have been forced to confront those who are not wearing masks, while others are allowing patrons in their premises without the requirement of wearing masks. This war started shortly after people began protesting against the lockdown. While many people have different reasons for opposing masks, others side with the political leaders sighting the government as a communist dictatorship, making masks a political issue. Despite the various causes, part of the public uses political controversy to reject the need to wear face masks.
Conclusion
The backlash over wearing face masks has been instigated by mixed messages coming from the top politicians. Politicians have the power to order extensive measures to ensure people wear masks. Therefore, politicians need to put appropriate measures towards adopting the culture of wearing masks. For the public, wearing masks is the best judgment that exists now until there is another solution; hence people need to take wearing masks seriously.
