Introduction
The computer is a device that can solve sequences of logical or arithmetic problems automatically through the application of computer programming. Digital computers apply a generalized set of operations called programs. Programs enhance the ability of a computer to carry out many tasks. A fully packed computer entails the leading software, which is the operating system, hardware, and peripheral device useful in the functioning of the device called the computer system. Years of development of the computer has led to more efficient, portable, and convenient tools. As the computer has become more advanced, so has its functionalities and applications.
The abacus, discovered in 1622 by William Oughtred, was the first attempt at a computing device. However, the analytic engine, conceptualized and designed by Brutish mathematician, Charles Babbage, between 1833 and 1871, was the first device to resemble the present-day machines. In 1970, Bonaparte started a computer project by ordering a switch from the old imperial system to the new metric measurement system. For ten consecutive years, scores of the computers could make the necessary conversions and complete tables. However, Bonaparte could not publish the tables. In the year 1819, Charles Babbage took a look at the unpublished manuscript and thought of a way that he could to reproduce the tables at a faster rate and with fewer errors and less human resources.
Babbage went back to England and settled on building a machine that could make computing work easier. He first made the difference engine, whose principal was mainly on finite differences, helping in calculating difficult mathematical problems by only using repeated addition and without the application of division or multiplication. Babbage was funded by the government in 1824 and later on perfected his idea. In 1832, Babbage produced a working prototype for making tables. Later on, Babbage diversified his concept to more intelligent design, the Analytical engine. The new idea was a mechanical computer that could solve multiplications and division. Most of the machine parts resemble the modern computer. The analytic engine has the mill, which resembles the CPU, the store which resembles the memory and an instructions reader. In 1991, Babbage's ideas got translated into a computer.
Early computers to be used were mainly for making calculations. Simple devices, used manually, such as the abacus, helped people since the olden days in making calculations. Early during the industrial revolution, other mechanical machines arose that helped to automate the solving of tedious tasks like guiding patterns for looms. In the early 20th century, more developed electrical devices solved specialized calculations.
The invention of the computer arose from the need to make calculations, mainly addition and subtractions easier. It has fastened the work of other people, such as scientists, as they can keep records of the further, they have reached with their work. Present-day computers consist of a central processing unit from metal oxide semiconductor and memory from semiconductor chips. The processing part does logical and arithmetical operations. Other complement devices for a computer includes keyboard, joystick, and a mouse. Computers have input devices such as mice and output devices such as computer monitors, which allows readable data from an external device and thus enabling the results to be retrieved and recovered.
Over the years, the computer has grown in functionality and expanded its scope from the initial academic and military environments to business, entertainment, social networking, and multiple other features. The growth of supporting technologies, such as the internet, will lead to further applications. Even so, computers have become part of man's day-to-day activities. They continue to influence the various aspects of life. In politics, for instance, computers are used for campaigning.
In business, computers have enhanced performance in almost all aspects, including production, supply chain, marketing, and sale. Computers have created opportunities that continue to employ people, and this has reduced unemployment rates in different parts of the world. Computers have also united people socially through functions such as social media, by making communication easy. However, the use of computers can lead to the dispersion of propaganda and the transfer of immoral information, which is a negative effect.
So far, the computer has led to more positives than negatives. Further advancements in computing will allow the realization of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. Therefore, humans can enjoy more functionalities that include secure storage of valuable information, easy and efficient access to information entertainment, and communication. Computers continue to apply in day to day life. More solutions are possible in the fields of engineering, education, surveillance, the performance of specific tasks, and government organizations. The application of computers has made life easier in many ways. One of the methods includes data storage. Safe storage of information and conservation of space through the use of a computer instead of using many papers to record data are critical functionalities in a modern transactional environment.
