Introduction
Tourism has been depicted as the most economically noteworthy industry in Hawaii, the only island estate in the US. Hawaii also spends substantial amounts in the tourism sector. As such, it has attracted a large number of tourists and especially from China, the fastest growing economy worldwide. The Chinese tourists have thus altered the culture of Hawaii in different ways through the introduction of their practices. Individuals in Hawaii from other nations such as Japan and Europe have had to experience the Chinese culture in Hawaii in different ways. As a Japanese living in Hawaii, my life has been influenced by Chinese culture through the aspects of values, education, food, and art.
A country's cultural values usually have an impact on its national identity and psychology. Values held by the citizens and even public sentiments are carried to the state leaders through the media and other information networks. The transfer happens directly and indirectly and this, in the end, has an impact on decisions concerning foreign policy. The awareness of the Chinese people has been affected by the customary cultural values which have further been observed among them whenever they go or visit. It is vital to note that the traditional values being referred to in this case include courtesy, benevolence, honesty, loyalty, harmony, wisdom, and righteousness. One of the core values observed among the Chinese in Hawaii is harmony that entails the proper and balanced organization between aspects (Lihua, 2014). These values have been of noteworthy effect on me studying and living in Hawaii despite the variance in my nationality as they are practiced by modern Chinese society. I have learned how to maintain harmony between nature and humankind and people and society. Also, I retain harmony between my mind and body. As such, this has assisted me in living peacefully and maintaining proper relationships as well. I can further point out that it has made my stay in Hawaii easier.
On the other hand, there is a strong emphasis placed on education in Hawaii, an aspect that was brought by the Chinese. Most of the Chinese men and women are employed in higher-level jobs, proprietary and managerial among others. As such, I have emulated the high value placed on education by Chinese as well. I have a better comprehension of the relevance of education and the opportunities it has to offer due to the Chinese culture and beliefs in education.
The food in Hawaii has significantly been influenced by numerous cultures, one of them being Chinese. Living in Hawaii, I have come to enjoy Chinese food. I like visiting the Little Village Noodle House for instance, which offers the best Northern Chinese cuisine in the whole of Hawaii. It is found in the middle of Honolulu Chinatown and serves the best dishes. Little Village Noodle House brings my friends and me together and has helped in creating great and long-lasting memories.
Certain Chinese celebrations are also marked in Hawaii that I have also come to enjoy. One of these entails cooking the New Year dishes. Some of them are referred to as 'lucky dishes' served during the first day of Chinese New Year. As such, I have come to be a part of this interesting cultural observation. Additionally, I often go to Chinatown to purchase vegetables such as onchoy spinach which I have never seen in Japan. I usually obtain fresh fish, meat, and vegetable at a low price. The presence of the numerous Chinese tourists has further made these celebrations quite relevant as it is observed through the sale in the clothing malls (Kojima, 2019). I like to take advantage of these offers and acquire new outfits at a lower price.
Art has been a significant part of Hawaiian culture since prehistoric times, and some of it has been influenced by the Chinese presence. Visiting Chinatown in Honolulu, Hawaii has exposed me to two spots where I got to admire the artwork of all types. There are art galleries in Chinatown and artists such as Pegge Hopper have been sharing their original work in a gallery that has been open since 1983. Also, there is the Ramsey Museum found in the historic Tam Sing Building. It has a fine pen and complex Chinese ink work which can be admired with a magnifying glass (Stern, 2018). As such, the presence of these art galleries has made me appreciate and even love art, something I rarely did while in Japan.
Therefore, it is evident that Chinese history has had a significant impact on Hawaiian culture. Chinese history has influenced my life in Hawaii through values such as benevolence, honesty, loyalty, harmony, wisdom. Harmony, a relevant Chinese traditional value that is further observed by the contemporary ones had made me preserve coordination between humankind and nature and individuals and the society as well. Also, I have come to love and appreciate the Chinese food and gained significant interest in art as well.
