Introduction
All activities done by human beings s always geared towards achieving the desired goal, at both individual and organization point of view. The setting may be formal or informal in which the actions are being executed. Where more than one person is involved, the probability of there being a lead is high, whether appointed or just self-appointed. Leadership is, therefore, very crucial as it guides the actions of the people being led and would direct the outcome of events. Achievement is measured by the degree and compatibility of final results and the pre-set goals of the individual and the organization. Different factors characterize leadership ranging from the style of leadership to the type of communication that is being used. All these aspects have an impact on the subjects who are being led and would more than often determine their productivity. One of the ways that leaders use to mobilize people to work is through group work. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of group discussion, even in the leadership of any individual.
Groups serve several functions in the organization and consequently have an impact on those who participate. The first role of group work is working on activities that are complex and may be tough for an individual to work on it alone. These jobs cannot also be broken so that individuals work on it. In the organization, such would include tasks that require the expertise of different departments at the same time, for example. The second role of group work is the generation of ideas and innovative solutions to solve problems that would need the input of different people. The individuals would pool the ides they have together and try to consolidate them into one solid idea. Group work also enables the implementation of decisions that are involved. This is most effective, especially where representatives from various working groups coordinate their activities into one activity.
Group work has several impacts to an individual and to the organization at large. For an individual, it creates a sense of responsibility. An individual is aware of what is required of them. It also brings about self-confidence as the person has support and back up from the group members, unlike when working alone. Group work creates a sense of culture through the growth of beliefs and norms that the group members develop. This is essential in the development of the organization's culture. It also improves productivity through the pooling of energies and human resources together toward a particular goal. Therefore, the organization is likely to achieve its goals with higher profit margins than when individuals would have been working alone.
There are several types of groups, including formal and informal groups, primary and secondary groups. Formal groups are formed to accomplish a certain task. It is characterized by the responsibilities of individuals being clearly defined; the relationship between group members is regulated, and they have a durable plan and structure. Information groups on their hand are formed to satisfy the individual needs and emotions. The functions are therefore born and maintained by the group, as long the members exist. In secondary groups, members know each other and, therefore, interact on a daily basis. For secondary groups, members-only feel joint but may not be together in one location. The relationships in secondary groups are mental, contractual, and rational.
Leaders in the organization are the ones who are tasked with the responsibility of forming ad directing these groups. They strategically create and develop both formal and informal groups that are staffed and empowered for success. Once these groups are formed, the leaders would assist them in changing to their relative needs, which would enable them to achieve their goals. A good leader also takes part in the groups and regularly checks up on their progress to ensure that they are in the right course of the organization. While doing the supervisions, the leader can determine the performance of the groups so as to identify effective and dysfunctional behavior. This would be very important so as to determine future behavior that would be adopted to improve organizational goals and objectives.
Leadership Style
The type of leadership that I use is servant leadership. This is because; leadership is all about guiding others and not ruling and overbearing them. In most cases, the qualities of the leader are from the inside and not on the external designation. Servant leadership builds good relationships because the followers are most likely to follow what the leader is doing. Therefore, it comes from the point of the leader doing tasks for the followers who would emulate the same. It creates a culture of continuous learning by the leader and the followers. The impact is the exuding of positive energy and believing in every member of the team. An example of servant leadership is mostly seen in the bible, especially in the gospels. Jesus Christ, being the main character, leads His disciples in s servant leadership. A good scenario is when he washes the feet of the disciples when the disciples are the ones who should be washing his feet. In my field of jurisdiction, an example is when given the task of leading a group to clean the environment; I would take them to the place and be the first one to do the cleaning.
My communication style in my leadership is the steady communication method. It has a significant influence on the servant leadership style due to the unique features it has compared to other communication styles. Steadiness communication is team-oriented, devoted, and sensitive, listener, caring, and peacemaker ad gregarious. Steadiness communicator is people-oriented, slow-paced, friendly, cooperation, and patient. There is interest in keeping close relationships. Considering the decisions of others and motivating them. Therefore, it becomes so easy to serve the people due to all these characteristics. It also makes communication of ideas visible ad easy for the group members to go on the right path.
Max Depree
Max was trying to explain the importance of connection through understanding and knowing the inner lives of the team members that we are together. This was, knowledge will be pioneered and make the group appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of an individual been the professional image that we have of people. His connection prepares the team to be ready for any unexpected challenges in the group and even in the business. This also creates an environment in which the ideas of the individuals grow and attain satisfaction. It also builds trust and commitment, which would have further benefits even in the lives of the individuals.
There is a notion that a leader being vulnerable and opening up would indicate that they are week (Asci, Cemberci, Civelek, & Gunel, 2015). However, opening up private life and issues would make problem-solving more comfortable and even correct errors that could have been caused by poor psychological conditions. For example, in my leadership, I get to meet with some group members who may have family issues; for example, the parents may be fighting. This disturbs them psychologically and therefore, may not be very active in the group discussions. If members are not in a position to understand what the student is going through, they may tend to think they are a joyrider and remove them from the group. But when they are understood, the students would be helped by maintaining patience and improving them with academics.
Principle-Centered Leadership
Covey discusses four main principles of leadership, which include security, guidance, wisdom, and power. These four principles govern the behavior of individuals and guide them in the successive points of leadership. Security brings about a sense of worth, self-esteem, identity, and personal strength among members of a group. The guidance gives the leader a sense of direction, while wisdom brings about balance, discernment, comprehension, and judgment. Finally, power is measured by the capacity, the courage, and strength of the things to be done.
Covey, liken leadership to sowing where the seeds are sown, watered, and then weeded and finally harvested. This is the very same way that leaders should people. A leader is expected to give a clear understanding of the desired results, give clear accountability, clarify assumptions, provide staff with time, resources and access and finally set time for presenting and reviewing the final results. Therefore, the path to success would be gradual and not what people expect to do things within a short time and use the short routes and expect results
Covey introduces a management tool of managing from left and leading from the right. This means that a leader is supposed to be all-rounded are be aware of every critical thing that happens. This can include work together with different departments to ensure that all the activities of the organization are achieved. Unlike managers, for example, have different roles. For example, the producer is responsible for getting the work done. Managers manage role conflict and ambiguity while leaders provide direction and vision for the group (Covey, 2015). Manson explains the reason for this leadership with an illustration that people may be climbing the ladder of success only to find it leaning against the wrong wall.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the effectiveness of a leader depends on how well the leader coordinates the group with the application of the right theories and concepts. Every action should be geared towards to wellbeing of the group member. Servant leadership is one of the leadership styles that are most effective as the members get motivated. This is backed up by the contribution of Cover to introduce the need for progressive and continual growth in every activity. Communication is also essential. This is because it is the channel through which information is passed to the members, the specific tasks, and the goals of each job. This will serve to give direction and also will be a basis for a control system.
