Introduction

British North America comprised three significant regions, which involved the New England Region, the Middle Region, and the Southern Region. The New England Region comprised; colonies of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island (Connors & MacDonald, 2016). The Middle Region included the provinces of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. Finally, the Southern Region involved colonies of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Despite all the regions being British colonies, each part differed in terms of the regional economy, area, and demographic profiles (Connors & MacDonald, 2016). The assignment will take a look at the local economy and the nature and organization of the labor force in both the Southern and Middle region.

The southern region was considered to be wealthier compared to the Middle area (Connors & MacDonald, 2016). Southern region was colonized by the British and it had good economy as it was intended to be a source of wealth for England, whereby it provided cash crops, which included tobacco. The climate in the area involved short winters and warm summers, which are suitable for growing cash crops like cotton, tobacco, and rice (Armstrong, 2016). The Middle area lacked a similar source of wealth compared to the southern part making the region lag behind in terms of the regional economy. Many people in the Middle region opted to migrate to the Southern part of the region in search of job opportunities in the farm plantations leaving the region isolated. This led to the area being left behind in terms of economy.

On the other hand, both the Southern and Middle regions had begun to embrace the slave trade. Most people opted to migrate to this southern region to seek employment in the farms hoping to have a good life after they earn from their servitude. The increased activities in the south of the area, in the farms, led to a situation whereby labor was intensive and that led to the emergence of the slave trade in the region to cater for the much-needed work in the cash crop farms (Armstrong, 2016). The situation of the slave trade became similar in the Middle areas as the regions started economically growing. The two areas embraced the slave trade which now had begun becoming a lucrative investment. Due to the increased agricultural activities in the Middle region, the labor was needed hence the slave trade became more intensive even in the region. Although some groups emerged condemning the acts of slave trade, the slave trade continued because of the high demand of the labor that was required in the farms in both the Southern and Middle region.
