Differences Between Ethical and Legal Issues

Ethical issues are those that affect people within the organization such as employees, employers, clients, business partners, suppliers, and other stakeholders of the business. Considering this scenario, TechFite's revelations that large bonuses are paid to higher executives are unethical but not illegal.

The company's ethics might be compromised because of the hour cuts from full time to part-time to minimize the time and benefits of workers. Undoubtedly, the money that was to be used to pay employees must be the one used to give bonuses to the top executives. The consequence of this decision is that it will affect employees and their families because of the reduced cuts. The employees would be unable to sustain their families. Besides, another implication is that it could result in high turnover rates, lower rates of satisfaction, and eventually reduced productivity in the company.

Another area where the company's ethics might be compromised is its lack of fulfilling its promises of helping the community. In the scenario, it is stated that TechFite has a habit of not funding the community and helping near buildings in their cleaning as it promised it would. The insinuation of this action is that it might result in legal issues with the city council. Also, the company might begin to lose its customers because of its ability to keep promises.

Purpose of the Ethics Officer

An ethical officer is a leader in an area of business conduct (Adobor, 2019). In any organization, the role of an ethics officer is to. Their duties and responsibilities include building and implementing an organization's ethics program, evaluating and reviewing vulnerabilities within the organization, and acts as a liaison to eternal stakeholders (Adobor, 2019). Also, the purpose of an ethics officer is to help a company to manage its ethics education program.

In TechFite company, for example, the role of an ethics officer would be to establish company policies and procedures that would act as guidelines to required behavior. Another role of an ethics officer in the company would be to enhance community relations and improve the image of the company. Another significant role is supervising the ethics and ethical decisions of the entire organization.

Corporate Social Responsibility in the Scenario

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business approach that helps it to become socially responsible to itself, the stakeholders and the community. CSR is important in a business because it helps a fir to build its brand, increase customer loyalty, enable organizational growth, increase sales, and attract staff. In TechFite, for example, the company can benefit from being socially responsible in a way that it would increase customer loyalty, would result in better brand recognition, and result in organizational growth.

The city of Dellberg might benefit from CSR in a way that it would improve the image and reputation of the city as well as keep it clean. Additionally, the community might benefit from CSR in a way that their living conditions and the quality of their environment would be improved. Also, the community might benefit in a way of securing employment in the company.

Ethical Desirability of Improving the Company's Reputation

TechFIte has failed the community because of its promises to help improve their lives, which it fails to do. For example, if the company would have assisted with the youth programs in the community, then there would be more successful people.

Besides, if the company would give the employees more time and benefits, then it would find support from the community and city workers. Within its community, a company needs to be viewed as socially responsible because it would build its reputation and increase its brand image. TechFite has a reputation and an image to protect by being socially responsible.

The company had promised the city of Dellberg greener resources. This would make the company get financial support from the city, which would, in turn, make the city greener. Also, the city would attract people and businesses that would bring partnerships and increase sales of the company.

Ethically, Socially, and Environmentally Responsible Course of Action

Based on the information provided in the scenario, the core values and culture of TechFite include boldness, passion, and consistency. Bearing that in mind, the ethically, socially, and environmentally responsible courses of action for the company include supporting youth programs, giving employees their benefits, and cleaning the environment respectively. TechFite would fix the issue of youth programs by making their ethical officer bridge the gap between the fir and the community. This can be done by helping struggling families with financial aid. More so, the company could fix the issue of giving employees benefits, the company could fix it by cutting bonuses given to top executives and use it to reward their employees. Regarding the issue of keeping the city green, TechFite would work with the city council to improve the environmental conditions of the city.

Analysis of the Courses of Action

Regarding the issue of youth programs, when TechFite addresses it, then it would display social responsibility because it would mean that the company cares for its community. Also, on the issue of giving employee benefits, it would mean that the company is being ethically responsible and minding the effort put in by its employees. Furthermore, regarding the issue of making the city greener, the action would mean that the company has its resources under control.

Rights and Responsibilities of Employees

In any organization, employees have a right to fair compensation, have a safe workplace, and be free from discrimination. Regardless of the nature of employment, employees are entitled to the mentioned rights. Based on the scenario, the mentioned rights are the once that employees should seek for considering the ethical nature of the business.

On the other hand, the responsibilities of employees based on the scenario include taking care of their health and safety in the workplace, comply with the occupational health and safety requirements, adhere to the company rules and policies, corporate with employers to meet ethical requirements of the business, as well as collaborate with employers to ensure the work environment is suitable to maintain productivity.

Ethical Responsibilities of the Employer

Within the context of the employer-employee relationship described in the scenario, the first ethical responsibility of the employer is to offer employees reasonable pay that matches their workload. Employers have an ethical responsibility of providing employees with reasonable work expectations and pay that would protect the health and safety of employees within the workplace.

The second ethical responsibility of the employers is to communicate effectively with employees to ensure that they understand their roles and responsibilities within the company. Most importantly, it is the ethical duty of employers to provide a safe working environment where both the employees and the organization would thrive. Employers need to have a genuine concern about the working conditions and well-being of their employees. All the business decisions made by the employers have to be reasonable and consider the welfare of their employees.

Ethical Business Dilemma

One ethical business dilemma that can be used to demonstrate employee understanding of the company's ethical standards is when the employer takes credit for an employee's work. For example, an employer can ask one of the employees in the company to do a project that would take two weeks and write a report for it. The project would later be submitted to the state. After the completion of the project and writing of the report, the employer signs the report and passes it to the county as his own without giving any credence to the actual researchers and writer of the report. In many organizations, employers take credit for their employee's work and most of them do not reward them for their hard work. In this case, the company should make their employees understand that they will always receive full credit for their work done. Employees would in, turn, understand the ethical perspective of the company and grasp their ability to stay true to their word.

Utilitarian and Relativistic Perspective of the Ethical Dilemma

The utilitarianism perspective focuses on the moral rightness of an action (Ethical Models, n.d). From the utilitarianism perspective, an action is good if it produces good and is considered bad if it produces negative results (Ethical Models, n.d). in the approach, consequences take priority over others (Ethical Models, n.d). Undoubtedly, utilitarianism only focuses on the results and not the action.
