It is a model that was developed by James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente, whereby they argue that willingness of behavior change among people within a different period. They examine smokers who have a health-related problem whereby they decide to quit smoking on their own, and it implies that people do leave a particular behavior if they are determined to do so (Mortada & El Twansy, 2018). Thus the model focuses on the idea of decision making and intentional change of an individual in the community. It is based on the assumption that people take time to change behavior; instead, change of habitual behavior occurs in a cyclical process. Individuals do move through stages of change, and at each stage, different intervention techniques and strategies do determine if a person will proceed to the next step of evolution.
Precontemplation: It is an initial stage that people are not willing to take action in the foreseeable future period (Petrocelli, 2018). People do not recognize that their behavior is unwanted and produces adverse effects. They do not value behavior change and put too much concentration n the disadvantages of changing one's behavior.
Contemplation Stage: It's a stage whereby people are willing and intending to commence a healthy behavior shortly an approximate of sixth months (Gorely & Bruce, 2018). They recognize that their character has problems and think of the advantages and disadvantages of changing behavior. At times they may still feel ambivalent in the journey towards behavior change.
Preparation Stage: People are ready to take proper action and start making clear steps of changing their behavior and have a belief that change of practice is a healthier decision (Etter & Sutton, 2018).
Action Stage: Is a stage whereby people have recently changed their character.
Maintenance: People do sustain their character change for a given period and work to prevent reoccurrence of the behavior.
Termination Stage: The individuals have no thought f returning to the problematic behavior.
Conclusion
The model seems to be interesting since it's a cyclical process that people must apply intervention strategies to precede to another stage. The model can be used in the future when accessing the behavior of individuals with health-related problems when they are determined to recover. For instance, people with mental health problems and substance abuse individuals can apply the model when they are committed to change the problematic behavior.
The Trans theoretical model gives a provision of strategies for the public health practitioner's interventions in addressing the decision making the process of people Thus it ends to target a specific group of individuals and encourages the assessment of peoples current status of behavioral change
