United Nations defines peacekeeping as a way of helping countries that are experiencing conflict to create conditions that promote long-lasting peace. United Nations has the Security Council, which has an obligation to taking action to preserve international tranquility and security. In a situation where it is not given the responsibility to take the peace action, regional organizations are authorized to do so. Three principles guide the UN peacekeeping operations. Currently, UN peacekeeping operates on three continents, with thirteen peacekeeping missions. This paper aims to expound on UNITED NATIONS TRUCE SUPERVISION ORGANIZATION (UNTSO).
UNTSO was formed in 1948; it was the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission ( Peacekeeping, n.d.).When the mission became established, its headquarters was in Cairo. The bases then moved to Haifa, known initially as the British enclave. Due to renewed fighting, the headquarter was evacuated and moved to Israel and later to the Commissioner's Palace in Jerusalem. The mission was formed after the Palestinian Arabs, with the support of Arab States, opened hostilities against Israel. These hostilities were a result of the plan by the UN General Assembly to divide Palestine to form an Arab State and a Jewish State (Peacekeeping, n.d.) Jerusalem was to be placed under international status. For this plan to succeed, the United Kingdom handed over Palestine, and as a result, Israel became a state. The Security Council called for an end to these hostilities in Palestine. The mission was headed by a UN mediator with the help of a team of military observers. The initial group of military observers was later referred to as the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (Peacekeeping, n.d.).
From 1949 to 1956, the mission was chaotic, but it later settled; however, there were complaints by Egyptians, Syrians, Jordanian, and Lebanese fronts. The continuous claims by the involved parties developed into increased violence despite the hard work of the UN mission personnel (Peacekeeping, n.d). Between 1967 to 1973, UNTSO helped in calming the rampage through the formation of boundaries between the involved countries. The original mission became impossible to fulfill due to the new agreement that helped cease violence between Israel and Egypt and Jordan and Syria. 1973 experienced an increase in the number of observers participating in UNTSO. The Israel-Lebanese conflict is credited for the mission's significant changes and the naming of the mission as UNTSO (Peacekeeping, n.d.).The latest News on UNTSO is Slovakia's reaffirming to remain firm in this times of Corona Crisis at its mission in UN mission in UNTSO, military and police components continue to fulfill their task and are prepared for extending deployment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, UNTSO has been very successful due to readily available military observers for deployment to missions that have been approved by the Security Council. The mission is also used for other peacekeeping operations worldwide today. It is evident how instrumental UNTSO has been in peacekeeping in the Middle East and around the World.
