San Quentin is the oldest men's correctional and rehabilitation facility in California. It is the only jail that has a death penalty and has a gas chamber. Above all, it houses a number of a serial killer and lethal murders such as Charles Manson. According to Rare look inside San Quentin Prison (2017), its population consist of murderers, cop killers, child killers, and, serial killers. While Warren Correctional institution is a multi-custody penitentiary that houses medium custody inmates. Intimates in Warren Correction facility are handled and treated in a friendly way and participate in economic activities through participation in inmate Constructional facilities (Warren Correctional Institution. n.d). Unlike those intimate on San Quentin who lived in poor condition and held for long as they are waiting for their death penalty
What causes such differences to occur within our justice system?
The difference is contributed to the nature and number of prisoners correctional facilitate handles. For instance, prisoners with serious offend tend to be sent in jail for long term imprisonment, and prison usually offered different program depending on the level of custody, i.e., maximum, medium, minimum or solitary confinement (Kaeble, Glaze, Tsoutis,&, Minton, 2016). On the other hand, prisoners who have committed crimes that are not serious usually send to jail where they usually engaged in educational, vocational, and, substance abuse program that typically help them to avoid a return visit to jail. Therefore, nature and number of prisoners influence constitute of facility environment, and, management practices of a correctional facility
How do these conditions affect the behaviors of inmates and correctional officers from an ethical and moral standpoint?
Since poor management practice of correctional facilities lead to severe security and health risks staff and detainees; make most of the prisoners in such context become more deviance. For instance in San Quentin prison which one of the oldest prison in the U.S but since its establishment, facilitates have never been renovated. Staff tend to quit job as they cannot stand pressure and remain human in their treatment of prisoners.
Is this justice?
It is not justice because, in either system, an intimate has the right to be treated humanely, not experiencing cruel and unusual treatment such as the denial of intimates right to visitation.
