In this chapter, the author talks about the game development journey, and the role of the unity development platform helped the game developers to make real-time games. The unity platform was key in helping the developers develop tools that are used by gamers. The existence is also dependent on the tools used in video gaming, as well as the practices and the business model of the engine. There have been recent changes in the production of video games, and in the 1990s and the 2000s, the videogame producers had to create the tools from scratch (Nicoll, & Keogh, 2019). During this time, they also had to get publishing deals, and the software kits needed to publish the video games from the brokers and publishers. Videogame production was a hustle as companies could not share their tools, and those who were determined to venture into this industry had to lease them. In the late 20th century and 19th century, videogame development required huge finances, tools as well as exceptional skills.

Before the 1970s, game engines and other videogame software were not used in the development of the videogames (Nicoll, & Keogh, 2019). The games were directly wired in computers and hardwired to circuits and not on the read-only memory devices. There was not established code f creating the content, so the developers created the content based on their principles. The developments of tools that facilitate the making of videogames have nowadays eased the process of developing the games. These tools are developed for microcomputers such as Apple II and the Atari 8-bit.

In the 1970s, the production of videogames was non-digital, and the developers used tabletop tools which were combined with the scenario editor (Nicoll, & Keogh, 2019). These non-digital tools were referred to as war engines enabled the developers to create their scenarios rather than play those designed by others. The war engines played a role similar to that played by the videogame engines. The videogame engines help in coordinating different parts of a videogame, and the efforts and their creation were necessitated by the shift of focus from programmers to artists and videogame designers.

Game engines have evolved over the years in the mid to late 1990s, where there was an increase in game development professionals that were developing the games. The demand for games was increasing, and therefore game developers wanted to meet the demand (Nicoll, & Keogh, 2019). There were no game engines at the time; hence the game developers relied on developing systems, codes, art, and music that was used in the games from scratch. The design of the user interface was among the challenging part that the developers had to deal with. There was an appetite for better graphics making the developers spend much time trying to develop better systems. To develop games with improved graphics, the programmers concentrated on art rather than software development.

The chapter also talks about the various stages that were passed by the developers in improving the video games; there are improvements in all the stages of game development (Nicoll, & Keogh, 2019). A gaming culture was made, and the developers wanted to meet the demand. The demand resulted in the video games being pirated, where the original ideas were copied and used to develop similar games. Game development was user-oriented to make the gamers enjoy playing the games. The popularity of game user-oriented development made the gamers to give developers ideas on how the games could be improved. Game development continues to evolve up to date.
