In the immediate investigation of the case, several things will be done. The first step to be taken is to ensure that the crime scene is secured. It is first done by locking the scene down. Locking the crime scene involves ensuring there are no people in and around the crime scene. A physical barrier will be of help e, g the yellow crime scene tape. By incorporating the physical barrier, a crime scene parameter will be established (Georgieva, 2020).
The parameter is the second thing after lockdown. As a consequence, no persons are allowed into the parameter except for law enforcement officers. The next step is to create a path for contamination. The path is the only way that people may get into and out of the crime scene. The path prevents contaminants from mixing with the crime scene. Sometimes this can have a disastrous effect on an investigation process.
The last step that would be taken immediately in the investigation of the case is to ensure a security officer is in the area to ensure no persons enter the crime scene. The security officer will be the final defense against unauthorized access. By carrying out the above processes, this will ensure the integrity of the crime scene is maintained. Furthermore, this will ensure the coroner, investigators, and forensic officers have an easy time in doing their tasks.
The first thing to be done in the collection of evidence is first to examine the environment of the crime scene. In doing a big picture search, an investigator gets to know the areas that may be focused on during the collection of the evidence. After doing the big picture search, a small scale detailed search is undertaken to find evidence. In this search, it will be essential to involve forensic experts because there is something that is beyond human perceptions. For example, in our case, the forensic can use black stain lightly to locate fingerprints on the dead body. Other methods employed to collect evidence are photographs and video recording of the crime scene.
The primary evidence, in this case, will be the use of both eye witness account and inculpatory evidence. Both of the evidence will ensure the suspect is charged for the murder of the young boy. In the criminal justice system eye, witness evidence has a high probative value than other types of evidence in a court of law. The courts will be considering things like competence, compellable, independence, and credibility of the witness in analyzing the value of the eye witness testimony.
In this case, the older boy's account will be enough in identifying the suspect and linking him to the murder. The reason for this is that he is the only person who witnessed the suspect going away with the boy. In addition to the eye witness evidence, inculpatory evidence will help link the suspect to the crime. In the criminal justice system, this type of evidence is located in the circumstantial evidence, witness testimony, and physical evidence. In other words, the court will look at this evidence in its entirety and determine whether it is enough to charge the suspect with a crime. Inculpatory evidence, in this case, will be the testimony from both the mother and the son, the physical evidence located at the crime scene, and even a fingerprint located at the crime scene.
Usually, in the criminal justice system, there is a tactical investigative technique and strategic investigative technique. The tactical investigative technique usually comes about when the suspect is still at the crime scene. On the other hand, there is strategic investigative, which is employed by law enforcement officers when the suspect has fled the scene, and a search is underway. A strategic investigative technique will come in handy in this case. It is because the suspect cannot be found in the crime scene.
The investigator will be forced to use crude ways in order to achieve the desired results. The person may enter into private property without any warrant and search it. The aim of this is to ensure the suspect does not run away. The investigator should be able to explain to the court the reasons behind his actions. The reason is that the action disregards rights which are enshrined in the law. It is impor6tant in the strategic investigative technique that the officer investigating has information about the complaint and everything related to the response to the complaint (Cundiff & Flinchbaugh, 2016).
Conclusion
In conclusion, an investigator must possess the necessary knowledge and skills that help carry out their work. Investigative thinking and investigative tasks are the two most relevant knowledge that is employed by investigators. Investigative tasks that have come into use, in this case, include evidence collection, information gathering, and taking testimonies from witnesses. The investigative thinking comes about during the analysis of the information and evidence gathered to come up with logical conclusions. For instance, in our matter, the logical conclusion is that the evidence assessed will lead to the suspect.
