As a result of the earth’s movement around the sun, four seasons are experienced all around the globe. These seasons include autumn, spring, winter and summer, and they occur at different intervals and times of the year. All four periods of the year are characterized by different climatic conditions with others being too hot while others are too cold. The style and habits of our daily lives are altered as the season change and individuals carry out their daily activities based on the current weather. Among the four seasons, summer is the hottest period of the year, while winter is the coldest. The differences and similarities that exist between summer and winter are highlighted below.
One of the primary variances of summer and winter is the temperature. As compared to the other three seasons, summer is the hottest period. The period is experienced from June to August in the northern hemisphere, and between December and February in the southern region (Vigneron et al., 2019). During summer, both the north and the southern regions are directly exposed to the sun’s rays while also experiencing longer hot days than nights. On the other hand, freezing temperatures and ice characterize winter. During this season, both the northern and the southern hemispheres are blocked from the sun and do not receive direct sun rays hence resulting in extremely low temperatures (Vigneron et al., 2019). Due to the cold temperatures, people’s moods become dark and sad due to the boredom that comes with staying indoors for extended periods. During winter, tree branches are left bare after all their leaves fall during autumn, and the beauty of nature fades as well.
Due to the difference in temperatures between summer and winter, ways of living like dressing is significantly affected (Mazurkiewicz et al., 2019). Summer is different from winter in both the types of cloth that are worn as well as the amount of the same. During the hotter periods of summer, the majority of clothing that individuals wear is mostly one-layered. These clothes mainly consist of t-shirts or tank tops as well as shorts. Light fabrics that are short and one-layered are sued during the hotter months of the year to allow more comfortable and faster body cooling. Conversely, during winter, individuals dress in clothes that are heavy and multiple-layered. During this period, people wear summer clothes beneath other warmer and heavier garments such as sweaters. The multiple-layered and heavy clothing is worn is to prevent heat loss and helps the body keep warm ((Vigneron et al., 2019). People also wear boots in winter to keep their feet warm as opposed to sandals and flip flops that are worn during hot summers.
Another difference between summer and winter seasons is the amount of average precipitation recorded during these periods. Both winter and summer experience very different conditions in terms of the amount of precipitation experienced. During the cold months of winter, rainfall and other forms of precipitation are more present as compared to the summer months where rainfall and snow are rarely experienced (Mazurkiewicz et al., 2019). Being characterized by endless rain, the winter season is mostly disliked by many individuals since people prefer conducting their daily activities in the sun. On the other hand, people are more likely to feel bliss during hot summer months as compared to the colder ones. Due to the conducive weather, a lot of entertaining and fun activities such as games are more enjoyable than during the cold months (Mazurkiewicz et al., 2019). Also, the winter precipitation leads to more car wrecks due to the slippery ground as compared to summer months when the land is dry.
Despite all the differences that winter and summer have, they as well have some similarities. These similarities include the Olympic games, season extremes as well as several holidays (Horne, 2019). During the hot months of the year, the Summer Olympics which includes games like hockey, golf, and tennis, is played. Winter Olympics are held during the colder months with sports such as ice hockey, ice skiing and snowboarding among others. Another similarity between the two seasons is that they both take place at the same time. While the southern hemisphere is experiencing winter, the northern region is experiencing summer at the same time. The earth is tilted on its axis justifies it since one side is closer to the sun while the other is further away, leading to both seasons happening at the same time.
Conclusion
The major difference between summer and winter are the temperatures. Summers are always characterized by high temperatures and less precipitation as compared to winter, which is defined by very low temperatures and high precipitation. Both the northern and the southern hemisphere receive direct sun rays at different times 0f the year which results in summer in one region and winter in the opposite part. Dressing code and lifestyle are also affected by the two seasons with people wearing light clothes during summer and heavy ones during winter. Heavy and multiple fabrics during winter allow individuals to keep their bodies warm. The similarities that exist include the Olympic games that are played during each season, season extremes and holidays.
