Mu Guiying is a picture storybook adapted by Lu Shida, but the drawings are done by Qian Xiaodai and Wang Yushan (Shida 2). The book was published and distributed by (Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House in 2011). The story revolves around Yang generations who fight the Liao Dynasty with the aim of defending Dynasty song which has long been popular in China. One theme portrayed in the story is the Chinese wish of being loving to their members of the family and protecting their country.

Mu Guiying represents the female fighters in the yang generations, and she is Mu Yu's daughter who has the power of using swords and arrows (Shida 5). She is a very significant person in the fight of defending the Song Dynasty, and she leads in the war after the adults of the Yang family all perish in the war. The widows of the family who were twelve finally die while fighting. Mu Guiying who has for long been a hero and still is especially among the Chinese.

Liao was a dynasty that existed during the Song Dynasty, and it carried out attacks on the frontier severally. They were very organized in terms of war to the extent that they requested the help of Black River military troops as well as Western Xia among other countries (Shida 15). During the attack on Waqiao Pass, they were led by Han Yanshou, Xiao Tianzuo, and Yan Dongbin. Liao battlefield was in the valley of Nine Dagons where they were set to fight with the Song Dynasty. The waqiao Pass was guarded by Yang Yanzhao and was assisted by Meng Ling and Jiao Zang. Due to the complexity of the battle array, Yang Yanzhao saw it as the Heavenly Gate Formation so he had to think hard about what he could do to handle the situation.

Yang Yangzhao sought the help of his brother and also sent Meng Liang to bring his mother she Taijun who resided in the capital city (Shida 46). Jiang Zang was the first to leave and head to the mountain, and after arriving there, he saw how peaceful the place was filled with old trees and green grass. However, he did not come to the mountain for sightseeing, so he proceeded to the temple to meet a monk and inform him what he had come for.

Since yande declined the request to join the war, he devised a plan and requested to stay overnight because it was already late (Shida 76). When he saw a pot of wine, he drank some, and when Yande entered the room, he requested the little monk to fill the bowl and give to Yande. Although he verbally declined to participate in the battle, he was concerned as he kept inquiring more about the battle and who were in the frontline. Yang thought that it was critical to involve Mu Guiying in the war and Zan agreed to the proposal.

A few women soldiers were however well prepared for the battle as they came to the hill with a sword. One of the girls who stood out in this group was Mu Guiying, and the Mu Gua was to fight using a hammer because Meng Liang had objected giving him his goose and arrow (Shida 103). Meng Liang was attracted to one woman who seemed very brave and was the leader of Muke Camp. Mu Guiying asked Meng Liang who he was and he explained and stated that he had to borrow Xiang Long Wood which had defeated the Heavenly Gate Formation.

Meng Liang tried to convince Mu Guiying o to contribute in the battle by providing timber. She was not opposed to the request but wanted to measure his talent and skills by provoking him. Yang Zongbao was so furious about the remarks and attacked this female master who led to the two combating each other (Shida 146). When she left to the camp, Zongbao followed her, but he was caught by a Hong Luo Lasso thrown by Guiying. Zongbao was seriously injured and was tied which made Jiao Zan and Meng Liang to come and rescue him. The two, however, were not spared as Jiao was cut loose from the helmet and Meng knocked down from the horse that he was riding. After Liang was rescued Zan was worried, and he retracted his troops from the Valley, but Guiying did not continue with the attack on the Song forces. She retreated and met with the officers where she said that she wanted to join the Song army. Gua advised her to seek the advice from her father who had been treated wrongly by the Emperor of Song. She, however, insisted that her father could not object her proposal and the rest of the officers agreed with her. Guiying successfully led the army, and they defeated the enemy who considered of approximately 400,000 soldiers. She sat in the tent and received news of victory from all the routes where the battle had been going on. Black River and Western Xia soldiers were rewarded, and Guiyan made sure that the frontiers were always guarded to avoid evasion.

In the recent past, women have risen in all spheres of life; hence this material is related to the problems in the present day World. There are people in the society who are always willing to do anything possible for the love of their family as well as their nation. There are those who fight until they lose their lives for the love of their country just like Yang Zongbao family members who all died on the battlefield. Such people have heroic characters, and although they are aware that their lives are in danger, they keep on fighting.

The most interesting character in this book is Mu Guiying whose courage in the battlefield in unquestionable. She is a character who can act as a role model to other women who are passionate not only in excelling in their careers but also in fighting for their nations. She is a hero not only to the Chinese people but also to other people in the World. This book portrays embraceable characteristics such as courage and determination to achieve certain targets. The characters are dedicated to their country especially when Mua Gua fights with a hammer when Meng Liang refuses to give him his goose and arrow (Shida 134). Instead of refusing to go into war for lack of a weapon h decided to use what he had. This shows that he is not a person who gives excuses when it comes to matters concerning his nation. This is a good book, and I can recommend it to people of all ages because it contains character traits that can be embraced.
