Introduction
The high turnover rates at Auxilio Mutuo are causing the Puerto Rican health facility to crumble as the institution is losing revenue due to the lack of personnel. During an epidemic, the situation would be unimaginable as the current patient to nurse ratio is overwhelming due to the experienced nurses seeking better job opportunities. Therefore, the administration should consider engaging nurse students as they are economical to replace the high turnover rates. But they should think maintaining the nurse leaders' position as the students without experience guide might not be effective in giving quality care that is essential for the profitability of the institution.
However, the nurse leaders' position faces numerous challenges because they are a bridge between student nurses and healthcare administrators. For instance, the lack of adequate supply of antiviral medication, vaccines, respirators, nurses, and even masks to protect the general public from a pandemic like a Coronavirus is not encouraging. Therefore, it is crucial for the development of this strategic plan as it describes the guideline that would assist in the retention of nurse leaders in Auxilio Mutuo Hospital for effective management of the student nurses during such a medical crisis.
Strategic Plan
Vision
The vision for the Puerto Rican health facility is to prevail as a forward-thinking and prestigious, comprehensive healthcare institution using unusual models employed in the provision of medical and healthcare within Auxilio Mutuo Hospital.
Mission Statement
The mission of Hospital Auxilio Mutuo includes meeting the healthcare requirements within its market jurisdiction using specialized as well as generalized healthcare services comprising outpatient and inpatient critical care. The management of the hospital also considers any action directly linked to the advancement of the mission as an operating input.
Objective
The objective of this strategic document is to empower the nurses with resources and information that will enable them to make precise decisions during the management of the nurse students during a pandemic. The management of Auxilio Mutuo Hospital needs to prepare the nurse leaders' competent leadership during magnanimous medical calamities like a pandemic, biological terrorist activities, or natural disasters (Neis et al., 2017). Thus, the leader nurse plans to ensure the objective of the strategy is achieved through serving patients, enhancement of the nursing innovation and excellence, as well as strengthening the infrastructure for the nurse manager.
Literature Review
One of the goals of the nursing leader's plan consists of leading the organization in the provision of improved patient experience, especially during the outbreak of a pandemic (Neis et al., 2017). Thus, the nurse manager ensures that nurses fill the bedside shift report promptly within all of the health facilities care units for the sick (Amrollahi & Rowlands, 2018). Secondly, they ensure that they round every patient daily to enhance the patient experience further. Furthermore, the nurse leader works towards the establishment of a workgroup to discover how the provider and nurse students can improve their communication.
To enhance the innovation of the student nurses, an association between the everyday nursing practices and the strategic plan ensures the development of a communication plan that offers updates on the tactics employed and the data (Brown, 2017). Besides, the RN and BSN usually strive to promote and maintain an environment of nursing practices that are evidence-based through involvement in exercises that assess the means of incorporating changes on the foundation of evidence (Jalal & Murray, 2019). Furthermore, to enhance the creativity and excellence in the nursing practices, the nurse leader engages the management to take part in encouraging and supporting an increase in the number of the health workers' role in initiatives that promote change.
Johnson and Smith (2018) note that the role of improving the quality of nursing care within hospitals during outbreaks such as Influenza lies with the nurse leader who ensures that indicators relevant for the assessment of the standards are present. The signs entail measures such as hand hygiene, infection prevention, falls, skincare, as well as pain. Therefore, the nursing leaders initiate the redesign of the health institution's pain flow sheet and facilitate the implementation of champion suggestions relating to pain (Johnson & Smith, 2018). Additionally, the leadership strives to re-evaluate the existing health care plan that will foresee the individualization of patient care during the medical outbreaks. Similarly, the nursing team improves the indicators over time, to familiarize with symptoms like the skin color changing to gray or blue in infected babies.
The Strategy
Serving the patients
For the prevention of the condition, the nursing fraternity shall continue sensitizing patients together with their families on the importance of hand hygiene in controlling the spread of the pandemic condition. Moreover, implementation of the hand hygiene will roll out through coaching after approach methodology that consists of getting feedback relevant for the achievement of a high compliance rate of up to 85% (Jalal & Murray, 2019). On the same note, the nurse leader will identify a team of nurse students that will develop a hand hygiene pledge that will involve all the healthcare staff signing the pledge and committing to it.
Enhancement of creativity and excellence within the healthcare workforce
The nurse leader will take the front position in transparent leadership that will offer the outcome of all clinical results. Through education of the sick regarding the significance of various nursing interventions using such tone, body language, among other consultation modes that their clients will easily comprehend, the nurses will improve their communication skills. The nurse manager will lead using a dependable format of data presentation throughout the patient units (Brown, 2017). For instance, in case of an outbreak of Influenza, the data should present in a way that any professional can easily understand the number of people infected, the number of carriers, the number cured, and the number of vulnerable individuals among other data.
Strengthening the infrastructure for the nurse leader
To enhance this leadership position, the management of Hospital Auxilio Mutuo will, through a communication document, describe the various leadership positions existing in the institution. Subsequently, the leader goals will be shared to all the healthcare workers from the RN and BSN to those in the senior-most levels within the hospital (Amrollahi & Rowlands, 2018). Additionally, the management will strengthen communication by using the nurse manager's role to broadcast ongoing updates for the student nurses through regular meetings and ensure that the information is delivered to the entire staff unit.
