Throughout this civil rights course, I have experienced growth in intellectual advancement and writing from the beginning of the seminar to its culmination. From the introduction to the discussion of central topics, I have gained knowledge in every aspect. For instance, from the opening of the seminar, I understood the concept of the civil rights movement. I learned that the movement involved struggles to attain equality and justice for Black Americans. Also, I learned that the movement was between the 1950s and 1960s and was spearheaded by leaders such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, among other leaders.
Training in the seminar has dramatically influenced my expertise on historical occurrences that transpired, resulting in privileges that the Black Americans enjoy today. Besides learning about prominent persons like Martin Luther and Malcolm, I also got enlightened by learning about other people who co-worked with them even though they are not famous in history. Before the seminar, I only associated the civil rights movement with the prominent men recognized in history.
Nevertheless, the women leadership and intersectionality discussion that was discussed in the seminar was an eye-opener on the leading women whose contribution geared the success of the civil rights movements. For instance, I learned that women like Septima Clark, Fannie Lou, along with Rosa Parks participated in first projects that improved the lives of Blacks in America.
Before the seminar, I always wondered why the pioneers of Civil Rights contended about human rights so much. My question was answered during the seminar sessions as I learned that every human being requires human rights as a fundamental need. Besides, I realized that the only thing that can sufficiently convey what is at stake when human life basics like freedom and dignity are threatened is the human rights language. For instance, even the highly upheld constitutional language is insufficient in explaining the severity of offenses such as foo denial and torture.
I realized that the human rights language was the best at expressing the seriousness of the violation of such laws because it is fundamentally human instead of the customs or particular regulations. Additionally, the human seminar helped me to understand that civil rights surpass a specific society and culture; hence it is universally relevant.
Another question that I had was whether or not the civil rights are campaigned for as they were before. Through the seminar, I learned that the current state of affairs today differs from the situation in the 1950s. For instance, during the beginning of the movement, multiple groups were pushing for civil rights across the globe. There are profound results from the promotion of human rights that occurred then. The occurrences have lasting impacts as currently, the local and national institutions are better placed on comprehending the political as well as social violation of the civil rights, and are also in a better position to formulate suitable strategies. These institutions have the legitimacy that external actors do not have.
Conclusion
Lastly, I learned that when such institutions are based in the local society, the domestic groups can marshal the available social forces in ensuring civil rights and policies are practiced. Asked to rate the seminar, I would say it was exemplary since I got a lot of information and feels better equipped to handle matters on human rights without any confusion.
