SECTION I - Introduction
I recently discovered that I am an outgoing person who enjoys the company of other people; thus, I am an extrovert. Furthermore, conscientiousness nature makes me committed to my work. These skills fall in line with the requirement of being a leader in any organization – the position I plan on holding in the future. Although extraversion is a great trait, I discovered it is a weakness since I find myself lonely when working alone. Thus, I plan on blending extraversion traits with some introvert characteristics because some roles require working independently.
Furthermore, my dream position as a manager requires some levels of confidentiality. However, I am too open to my friends – thus, it is imperative to improve the skills of exercising some degree of privacy. I also noticed I quickly get irritated, and at times I feel anger, fear, and frustration, among others. Therefore, I need to work on my neuroticism nature to become a good leader.
SECTION II – Human Interaction Skills
The best management skills that aid in the engagement of employees include communication and motivation. Communication is one of the critical pillars of sustaining an excellent employee workforce. The human resource department in an organization keeps open channels of communication to ensure everyone gives their grievances. Open communication also allows employees to provide their suggestions in critical strategic implementations in an organization. Effective communication helps in employee retention since individuals own every process in an organization (Jiang & Luo, 2018). An organization also minimizes losses since everybody will always be on the same page in the execution of duties.
Additionally, a manager can use motivation as one of the strategies of engaging with employees (Mikkelsen et al., 2017). Some of the critical areas of motivation include promotions, salary increments, gifts, employee learning and development, and praising efforts through word of mouth. All in all, adequately instituted channels of communication and employee motivation will always translate to improved productivity.
My leadership philosophy: motivation, extraversion, and communication as a tool for success. I realized that these are the basic principles of life that promote better performance at work.
SECTION III – Personal Development Plan
After attending this class, the concepts of SWOT analysis enabled me to explore my strengths and weaknesses. The course helped me realize that some of my personality traits like conscientiousness and extraversion, are core to the success of any leader. Therefore, I endeavor to create a weekly personal development program that will ensure I keep on improving on my traits each day. Moreover, the course has indeed helped me evaluate the areas of improvement in my current position as I prepare to be a future leader. I also realized that I need to strike a balance between neuroticism, openness, and extraversion for me to make a great leader. Therefore, I am now determined to shape my skills and attributes to set myself apart as a future leader. The course also made me realize that the essential elements like communication and motivation are vital in ensuring employees’ best performance at work (Mikkelsen et al., 2017).
SECTION IV—Relevant Goals
1. Goal 1: Improve my neuroticism traits.
The steps I will take to improve this attribute include thinking and taking a pause when I get irritated before I talk. The biggest obstacle to achieving this goal is my extraversion attribute, which makes me domineering towards others. I have created a weekly evaluation plan which will help me get feedback on how I have been able to handle my emotions.
2. Goal 1: Communication.
The crucial steps that will enable this goal to succeed are to enforce proper communication process and coordination processes. The actions necessary for the success of this goal is to enroll in professional communication skills courses. The biggest obstacle to achieving this goal is the costly fee charged for the course. I plan to overcome this obstacle by enrolling in schools that offer a scholarship to needy students.
3. Goal 3: Motivation.
Attending leadership workshops and seminars is the step that will enable me to achieve this goal. My busy school and work schedule do not give me sufficient time to accomplish this goal. I plan on using some of my free time to attend webinar sessions.
