Introduction
Ms. W seems to be experiencing domestic violence from his boyfriend based on the physical and radiologic examination. She has a fractured arm and bruises, and the radiologic exam showed that she had healed fractures, which means that Ms. W has been experiencing domestic violence for some time now. Many people find it hard to reveal that they experience domestic violence due to a lack of trust in health care providers. To provide patient-centered care, nurses need to understand the actual causes of illness or injuries. Cultural diversity also plays a role in the interaction nurses have with patients.
In this case scenario, the nurse needs to understand Ms. W's beliefs and values. When trying to establish healing relationships with patients, culture is very important and should not be overlooked by nurses. Culture may negatively affect the health care that is given to the patient. The nurse should take some actions to gain the confidence of Ms. W's confidence so that he or she can make her approachable and understandable. The nurse can counsel Ms. W on why she should open up so that she can be assisted. This will include expressing sympathy to Ms. W and promising to help her recover and offer any other assistance that she may need. The nurse should also educate Ms. W on what she should do in case she has been experiencing domestic violence with his boyfriend.
To make Ms. W open up about her situation, the nurse should familiarize with the patient's culture and believes and act with the utmost respect. The nurse also needs to create trust and promise the patient that whatever information she will reveal will be used for her benefit and will not be shared with anyone else. By so doing, the nurse will make Ms. W approachable and make her narrate her situation. This will help in the delivery of care to her and also help her to deal with her situation emotionally.
A Plan for one Additional Nursing Problem using Benner’s Philosophy
Mr. John presents in the hospital with fever, dry cough, and tiredness. The nurses suspect that Mr. John may have contracted Coronavirus. Coronavirus is a complicated infection that needs a lot of care to avoid the spread of the virus among the nurses. Benner's philosophy states that expert nurses have developed skills and understanding of how they should care for COVID-19 patients (Benner, 1984). Since the outbreak of the disease, nurses have been put through educational training that has enabled provided them with the knowledge and skills of how they should care for the patients. The expert nurses are not the ones who hold the best position or are paid higher salaries but those who have gained the necessary skills and knowledge of caring for patients. Therefore, in the case of John, those nurses in the health center who have the knowledge and skills of caring for COVID-19 cases should proceed by isolating John and providing him with outcome-based care to help him recover. The nurses who should take care of John should also have a multitude of experiences of caring for such patients so that they can understand what necessary actions they should take in case John develops further complications. According to Benner, nurses go through stages before they become expert nurses. She gave out five main levels of nursing experience, which include novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (Benner, 1984). According to Benner's theory, all these levels are determined by the level of experience and skills and knowledge that a nurse has gained. That is why, in the case of John, nurses with a lot of experience and skills and knowledge about COVID-19 should care for him to ensure that he recovers.
