While reading Halnon's "Poor Chic," the most striking feature is the multifaceted consumption of poverty represented by poverty's rational and irrational consumption. The sensible side can be explained by inadequate human resources to choose between goods and services available in the market. Simultaneously, the irrational side can be represented by class caricature for fear of being socially excluded. "Poor Chic" displays obsession and style modeling of expensive – ‘fun of poverty’ (Negrin, 197-213). An outstanding feature with “Poor Chic" is the modification of poverty class by exaggerating how class status has been represented in "Poor Chic" through work absentation and conspicuous reckless consumption amid an inability to choose between goods and services.
Poor Chic, however, portrays people living in disadvantaged societies lack free will to bargain over-marketed goods and services—hence living with the fear of being socially excluded—reducing the complex character of a human being into one function (Benz, 460-478). This being of utmost importance, the people living in poverty should also live within their means to avoid the shortcomings of wanting to belong to a higher class. People should not use Socioeconomic status as a means of creating inequality in society. Thus, there is a considerable need to redistribute economic resources to create balance among cultures. In essence, to counter the importance of limiting the way of life of different societies. To reduce the occurrence of a dominant class over the others. Countering stereotyping is seen as associated with class inequality, valuing and pulling out the disadvantaged from their redecorated and elevated form. To promote the system and functions of class representation so that they no longer reflect them.
The feature of Poor Chic in esteemed fashions to me is more confusing. Simultaneously, it is an unpardonable act impersonating someone belonging to a higher class, e.g., a lawyer, less care when members of a higher level impersonate a disadvantaged person of a profaned status—deemed to be disrespected. Despite individuals' inability to choose between goods and services due to lack of enough human resources, they display ignorance about sliding into poverty by mindless consumption.
Conclusion
I can't entirely agree with the manifestation of the disadvantaged in "Poor Chic." Using stereotypes manifest inequality is making fun of it. Personality characters created through the consumption of goods and services are not self-worthy. Imitating poverty does not do away with the reality that poverty exists. I disagree with the notion of tourists confining the poor to a world of their own. People should not see Weight-lifting as an activity of the higher class. I can't entirely agree with the organization of Poor Chic as a method, of course, vacationing. The display of class worth through wasteful consumption and vacation in poverty by Poor Chic tourist is dehumanizing.
