Introduction
Growing up and learning to be independent has been a motivation towards my progress. There are memorable moments that have come my way that I would hardly forget since they have molded me to become what I am today. Having being raised in a family where my mother was Hispanic, and my father is Greek, it was at first a challenge to learn the two languages at ago. I wanted to interact with my parents in their most convenient way, and that is why I wanted to learn the words they understood better. My determination to learn the words helped a lot in my development as I was able to develop new cognitive skills, social skills as well as interpersonal skills. I have since then been using the acquired skills in my childhood, and I continue to develop them as I want to become better every day.
I was privileged to be raised by my grandmother, which was a good feeling as our relationship was good. She, however, could only speak Spanish. I was also forced to learn the language, which was a challenge at first but soon I was able to master the language. Learning all the three languages almost at the same time was not an easy thing, I had to learn them so that I could enhance my communication skills with the people who I associated with. The challenges faced during that time helped me to learn to be ready and willing to learn at whatever moment. I was encouraged by my mastery of the languages, and I was confident I would get through in any challenges that came my way. It is true that leaning the languages has prepared me in understanding diverse cultures and made me stronger in my education as I am currently able to be among the top 25% of our class.
I used to play basketball, football, and baseball when I was at the age of 11. Playing significantly impacted my physicality as it developed my muscles to become stronger. Playing these games helped me learn a lot about life, that in life determination is key to success and hard work pays. In sports, if the team does not focus on their objectives and get determined to attain them, they won't be able to win over their opponents who are better prepared. Life has never been easy, there are so many challenges that come on one's way, and I needed to be ready for them. Playing made me believe in not giving up since at times when you are about to give up success is just knocking. I had seen where we thought we could lose a game only to win it, the games made believe in remaining focused. My involvement in the games improved my interpersonal skills, social skills, and my decision making. I had to make choices while playing and to make the game interesting then the option needed to be the best one. Just as in life, proper decisions need to be made to avoid repercussions in the future.
I later chose to specialize in playing basketball as I had realized I had greater potential in the sport than the other games. While playing basketball, I noted the importance of having teamwork and maintaining good relations with others. Sport reduces cases of racial discrimination, having grown in a community where there were mixed racially but with a majority of Asians with a percentage of 35%. I had less difficulty in interacting with new people, socializing with them as I could meet all these races while playing. I was able to understand that people have different potential but none should be discriminated against regardless of their age, gender or their social status. I have learned to respect people as it is one of the best ways of maintaining peace and harmony in our societies today.
I live in a community whose larger population is made up of upper-middle-class level individuals. I would say I am lucky as I can get access to social amenities, where I meet other community residents. I have however noted there are families with low incomes and are in severe poverty, some people tend to develop a negative attitude toward them, but that should not be the case. Every human being is capable of achieving success; some only lie behind because no opportunity has been represented to them. I have learned to help others when I have the potential to, as it boosts the levels of living standards for the less privileged to get to where others are.
Conclusion
My growing up, with the different types of exposure that I have had, has made me a better person passionate about success, helping others, respecting others and being able to make vital decisions on my life as I get challenged and learn. The hardships that I have gone through always act as morale for me to want to do better and believe that I can. I want to contribute to reducing discrimination in the world as I continue to learn to be useful to the society.
