In the Big Bang Theory, Amy is a tough lady working along Sheldon. The two seem not to agree on anything they do. In one incidence while the two are in the laboratory researching and analyzing a brain, Sheldon tries to explain how where she could have picked up an alien parasite. In Sheldon's explanation, he offers that it could be from star-traces. Amy hasn't seen the Star-tracks the motion monster and therefore Sheldon tries to explain it to her. However, she resorts back by asking if humans should live their lives based on cheap scientific fiction. The statement is so harsh for Sheldon since that is his field of specialization. Although he is hurt, he does not argue but just stays quiet takes a deep breath and does not fight back.

In this, it is evident that this conflict between Amy and Sheldon is not effectively handled. The reason is that Sheldon accommodates the conflict by just keeping quiet, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Although he is angered by Amy's response, he responds by just keeping quiet, avoiding responding, and accommodating Amy's words and attitude. In accommodation, there is a low concern for oneself but a high concern for the other party. In this way, Sheldon ends up giving in to Amy's demands despite how badly he is unset of hurt by her rude comments. Additionally, Sheldon, in this case, tends to talk in a soft and in a reluctant way when Amy asks why he is behaving in the manner he has in response to her words. As he responds, he avoids eye contact with Amy by keeping his eyes closed (Bevan, Hefner & Love, 2014). His body posture remains closed, with his hands drawn inwards, and not using gestures.

Amy and Sheldon could solve their conflict by using openness address the conflict and maintain their relationship behavior. The strategy will involve using an honest relationship where the two parties should have an open and honest conversation about their relationship (Bevan, Hefner & Love 2014). In the open conversation, they could discuss the different issues affecting their relationship and how they could be resolved. The openness allows a balance in self-disclosure where both parties get to share their feelings, expectations, and needs in the relationship. In this, communication will be the pivotal factor in the communication balancing the two parties.

To conclude this discussion, it is worth mentioning that interpersonal relationships are common to everyone. In all interpersonal relationships, there is conflict but the most important aspect is how the conflict is handled to between the parties. It is important that the parties use effective communication as a way to solve their conflicts and problems with others around them. For instance, in the case used, Sheldon uses accommodation for Amy's behavior and attitude. However, they could use openness where they incorporate honest conversations and balance in self-disclosure between both parties.
