I was seated by the roadside waiting for the bus; I could not help but notice the persistent shadow that kept creeping next to me. I had the urge to move away from it, but I was also in need of the company since it was getting darker. My hopes of getting a bus in the cold spring were slowly diminishing and getting slimmer as the hours went. My newly acquired friend had refused to leave too and kept tugging closer and gawking at me. I could not help but admire the way it was edging closer to me as time went by. Since dusk was first approaching, I figured I would need a place to spend the night, and my only hope was my friend next to me. The bus was taking forever to come, and I was feeling devastated because of it.
It seemed to be in no hurry and did not give a care in the world of the approaching darkness. It stood tall, and undisturbed like it was waiting for night to engulf it and take it home. With the only guts I had left, I said hi to it and asked if it and allowed it to lead me to the unknown. I was taken aback since my fear of strangers was higher than my need for help, but I religiously followed. It was in front of me leading the way. On reaching its place, I was given a warm welcome, tender love, and warm food and for a long time, I felt like I found a home. The emptiness and despair that had threatened to engulf me were finally a thing of the past. I saw more happiness and fulfilling life by making a decision I was afraid of.
Summary
The elements in the story are a man, shadow dusk and a bus. The twilight and the bus describe the uncertainty in the man life, and he does not know how to deal with them. The shadow, in this case, is the glitter of hope that one gets but ignores it or doubts it. He finds himself in a hard situation, and he does not know how to deal with the situation. However, there is a solution that looks so tempting, but he is so reluctant to take it. The shadow is beside him all through, but he is unsure whether it is the right decision or not. He, however, makes the risk of talking to the shadow and later following it home. The choice is hard, but the results are amazing for with the shadow he finds a new home. The original story by Octavio Paz is about a man who falls in love with a wave he finds happiness with the stream but the wave later plays him, and he feels cheated. The connection of the two stories is that they all are about men who fell in love with a wave and a shadow.
The stylistic choice used in the text is personification. The shadow has been personified to fit the human form and be able to communicate. This has made the narration more lively and exciting to read. First persona narration has been used to make the reader understand and be part of the authors' story. The use of dusk and bus as uncertainty can be described as metaphoric since they are used to represent something that is different from what they mean. All these stylistics devices make the story interesting, easy to follow and understandable.
