Introduction
South California is an excellent travel destination with a pleasant climate, attractive sites, rich history, and geographical position among others. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a bustling airport in the US and the world with the capacity of over 700 flights and about 59 different aircraft carriers a day across various countries. All these activities taking place in California brings serious noise issues.
Problem Statement
Noise pollution can be termed as an amount of sound in the surrounding that may disturb or annoy people. Research shows that the well-being of a person can adversely be affected by sound pollution. Loss of hearing, stresses, blood pressure are some health problems linked to noise pollution. Productivity at work can be lowered since noise leads to lack of proper sleep and may lead to fatigue.
Management of Noise at LAX
Noise management at Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA) has been a thing of concern which has seen active management measures put in place to curb the problem. Noise management program in this airport was initiated and implemented in 1959 where people with the same thought were incorporated to work alongside other stakeholders. Federal Aviation Administration worked with LAWA to reduce noise pollution. LAWA implemented its plane noise reduction strategy to mobilize money to help run the noise alleviation process as provided by the State Noise Standards. Evaluation of possible methods to stop the noise primarily to the private places by procedures like early turn program and preferential runway use procedures and offloading of passengers and cargo and safe take off towards the west.
The US noise control Act of 1972 states that citizens should be protected from excessive noise, LAWA, therefore, works hard to achieve this (Laszlo, McRobie, Stansfeld & Hansell, 2012). FAA is also obligated to ensure insulation from noise coming from the airport to homes nearby. Noise is considered a health hazard to physical and social well-being by the California Noise Act of 1973. Additionally, "Over Ocean Operations" is a procedure to abate noise from planes where flights coming to the airport need to approach from the Atlantic Ocean from midnight to 6:30 am where the weather conditions made it impossible (Khardi & Abdallah, 2012). Airplanes should use the runways that are further from homes for takeoffs and landing during the day and in the evening.
Recommendation
The residents of California have been enlightened on the severity of effects of noise pollution. These educational campaigns have had an impact on most people. Resident s used not to follow the rules such as fitting their houses with sound proofs and buying homes away from the airports. The stakeholders are working together for the best of the citizens with a common aim of reducing the noise pollution. FAA should give in to the request of LAX to stop night time take offs to the east to control noise pollution. However, this could be a significant economic blow to the airlines.
Conclusion
Air transport is the most convenient for long distances. A major challenge is a noise in the major towns that emanate from these planes. Residents of Inglewood have been victims of this pollution from huge planes landing and taking off at LAX. Too much noise can cause hearing, defects lack of proper sleep, heart and blood problems and many more.
