It is essential to have a term limit for any position in the government. Term limit refers to the legal restriction limiting the number of terms which an officeholder can serve in a specific elected position. In Texas, there is no term limit for the position of a governor. Thus, a governor can serve as long as the citizens elect them. Term limits tend to curb the possibility of monopoly in which an individual becomes a leader in a particular position for life (Kraemer, Charldean, and Prindle 151). Therefore, I think the Texas governor to be limited to serve two four years term to curb monopoly in the state.
It is important to limit the Texas governor to serving two four years term for the citizens to correct inequalities hindering the challengers and aiding the incumbents (Jones 202). For instance, governors usually get million dollars that should be used in paying salaries, travel expenses, and office expenses. While competitors work, they do receive upward wages while reducing the income of the challengers who usually resign as they run for the seat of the governor. If a governor stays for long in office, inequality issues might arise (Kraemer, Charldean, and Prindle 151). For instance, he may implement development programs for the areas that supported him during the election and neglect the areas that supported the challengers. Resources might also be unevenly distributed which affects some of the residents of Texas. Therefore, term limits help in ensuring that there is congressional turnover in Texas.
Term limit is also necessary for the Texas governor to help in reducing corruption (Kraemer, Charldean, and Prindle 152). Most leaders who are re-elected do take off some of the government resources. Therefore, limiting the number of terms helps in lowering corruption issues. Limiting the number of governor terms will benefit the citizens of Texas to choose better leaders who will assist in developing the state. Limiting the number of terms allows citizens to select the potential governors with good qualities basing on their past performance in the different areas that they have worked. When there is a term limit, leaders will work towards ensuring they leave a good legacy by performing well and providing the best services instead of stealing the government resources because auditing can be conducted after they leave office. Furthermore, term limits make the incumbents maximize their performance as they present the voters using a track record which can be utilized in improving selection an screening out the low performers in Texas.
Conclusion
Term limits are essential for the Texas governor as it makes him more responsible towards his constituents as they might also become constituents. It means that he will have to adhere to the rules that he created while in office. Furthermore, term limits help the governor to develop financially beneficial commitments to the lobbyists and special interest groups. Thus, undermining lobbyists threats and their primary influence on legislation (Jones 203). Money usually plays a significant role in deciding the person who wins an election. This issue means that the incumbents have the benefits of the profits which they made while in power including contributing to special interests and organizations for them to be reelected. However, they might not be the best individuals for the position. Therefore, term limits assist in eliminating shady and profitable relationships that exist between special interest groups and politicians to reduce the wealth gap among the candidates.
