Introduction
The lyrics to the songs "Do I" and Got What I want" by country songs singers Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean have various similarities and differences that unite and pit them against each other respectively. The premise of this discussion is to analyze the similarities and the differences in the song lyrics by the two artists.
Listening to the songs at face value, it is apparent that Bryan is second-guessing himself about his mistress' love for him, on the other hand, Aldean is assuring his lover that he is contented with her love. Immediately, the common attribute about both songs is that they are about love and the lyrics to both songs speak to a relationship between a woman and a man. Equally, in both lyrics, the singers allude to some sense of doubt about the love between the man and the woman. In this regard, the foremost similarity in the lyrics of both songs is that they are both love songs.
A notable difference between the "Do I" lyrics and the "Got What I Want" lyrics is that in the former, Bryan is second-guessing himself by questioning whether his lover still loves him as she did before. On the other hand, the latter's case, Aldean is assuring his lover who is second-guessing herself on whether Aldean is contented with their relationship. To this end, Aldean affirms to his lover that "I got what I want" which is the main part of the chorus to the song (Aldean). On the contrary, Bryan is withdrawn from his lover, and questions whether she still has feelings for him. In the lyrics to "Do I" the singer keeps asking whether he makes romantic appeals to his lover as before in the infamous phrase "do I?" it is this question that affirms that Bryan is second-guessing himself about their love (Bryan).
To affirm the difference, Bryan's lyrics are tantamount to a break-up song whereas Aldean's lyrics are reminiscent of a love song churning affection. Bryan's lyrics note "Now I'm second-guessing everything thing I see" (Bryan). Whereas Aldean's lyrics affirm "When I got what I got I don't miss what I had" (Aldean). The latter signifies that he is in a happy relationship with his lover and; hence, contented with it. The opposite is, however, the case for Bryan as the former quote notes that their relationship is in turmoil.
Another notable difference in the lyrics of the two songs is that Bryan's song infers that his relationship with his woman is about to break up as they no longer share the intimacy that they once did. Bryan notes this by phrases such as "Would you rather just turn away and leave me lonely" (Bryan). Indicating that the romance in their relationship has dwindled and that it is about to come to a halt. For this reason, the "Do I" lyrics can be termed as signifying a break-up song.
In comparison, the Aldean lyrics allude to a relationship after a breakup. It appears that Aldean has gotten into a new relationship after going through a heartbreak and; therefore, is assuring his new lover of his devotion to her. Aldean sings "Ain't no second thoughts, no regrets, no kinda maybe no wishin' I turned back." (Aldean). Hence, in every sense, Aldean is assuring his new lover of his satisfaction with his newfound love. Therefore, an indication that the lyrics to the "Got What I Want" song is a jolly mood after finding new love following a heartbreak.
The symphony in the lyrics of the two songs also portrays different emotions. When listening to the Aldean song, one cannot help but grin at the happy mood that the lyrics create in the mind of the listener as Aldean assures his lover that he is not having second thoughts about their love. "In the back of your mind, you might think there's somethin' more I want... No, I don't, No I don't" (Aldean). This assurance develops feelings of joy as it communicates a mood of love and happiness between the singer and his lover.
On the contrary, the "Do I" lyrics communicate quite a somber mood as Bryan is sad that his relationship is coming to an end. "Do I just need to give up and get on with my life. Baby do I" (Bryan). In this regard, the attitude expressed in the song is quite resigned and shows no hope of salvaging the relationship. For this reason, the Bryan song differs from Aldean's as it communicates a break-up that appeals to people who are nursing heart-breaks. In comparison, Aldean's song lyrics are appropriate for newly found lovers who are basking in the joy of their affection for each other.
Conclusion
Conclusively, the comparison and contrast of the lyrics to the song reveal similarities and differences alike. The main resemblance being that both are love songs about relationships whereas the core difference is that one is a love song celebrating love whereas the other one is a break-up song denoting heart-ache caused by loss of love in the case of Aldean and Bryan's lyrics respectively.
