In this time and day, there are so many social media platforms which are in disposal to everyone, and there are more being designed every day. The social media is a mainstream part of life. In the past, many individuals did not want to involve themselves with the media and share their stories online. Just like technology, the species has slowly but rapidly gotten used to fit the modern times. Through the adaptations, people have now begun communicating in the newly designed technology through a platform such as social media. In new society, there are a lot of sites such as Facebook, E-mail, Twitter and other various websites which largely consume people's lives. While social media can contain a varied number of advantages, it also has its setbacks which are mostly ignored. As social media is slowly but rapidly becoming part of our societies, it is important for social media users to carefully examine the setbacks and comprehend the negative impacts of social media.
There are some things which people need to learn and comprehend that social media is there to stay. When one uploads a photo or a life story it will be seen there with generations to come. People should take precaution with what they post on the internet since when one post something in the heat of the moment it would be very difficult to delete it on the internet (Bildey, 2018). Even if the person can delete what they had written someone might have taken a screenshot and would, later on, post it.
As much as everyone would love there to be people of sound mind and free of crime, some people are mean. The mean people would love to become the main controllers of the internet whereby sometimes they overdo it through bullying others on the internet. It is the responsibility of the parents who have children and have access to the internet to control what they view in the social media platforms (Bildey, 2018). The danger is not only on cyberbullying, but there are also strangers who have bad intentions and love to hide behind their screens and befriends people with long-run intentions of harming them. The digital photos that people share through the internet can also tell one's location which is very dangerous.
Social media has the jealousy effect on people; some of the people that are there on the internet admire the lives of other people who practically do not have such a life in real life. It has a huge negative effect on family breakages since one might push their partner into getting a life that corresponds to that of their friend online, just to 'fit in.' It is difficult when one sees another's life with a perfect home where children are all smiling, happy relationships and some pictures of their gorgeous homes and lastly vocations that they don't get to enjoy. Some of the people in social media are overdoing it by posting "happy" photos while their true life is the polar opposite.
According to Foster (2015) teens are not careful with what they post on social media and would bring about future complications. The same social media contains future employers where the teenagers post their partying pictures. The same teenagers have parents future children who will one day see what they have been doing in the parties. There is a lot of over-sexualized clothing on social media. When the little girls get into the internet, they are now aware of the type of clothing that will catch them the attention they need where they end up being manipulated. Some of the teenagers on the internet are trying to create videos that will get them the attention they want and therefore doing videos that are extremely dangerous or sometimes humiliating. The teenagers are not aware of the impending danger that they pose to their health they might also sustain serious injuries (Foster, 2015). The social media has been turned into a flat form where teenagers seek attention through shaming others or publicly humiliating them. However, the problem cannot be considered as a problem for the teenagers alone but also for the whole society as a whole. There is a lot of things that people do not know when sharing a video that they think is fun yet somewhere posted it to humiliate others. There is a person who records some embarrassing situations and posts them on the internet; the sharing of such videos does a lot of harm to the specific people who never had an idea of what is going on.
According to Walton (2017), there are a lot of ways in which social media affect the health of individuals. There has not been certainty as to whether the internet addiction can be said to be real or social media addiction. According to research, which was done by Nottingham Trent University regarding some characteristics that exist in users of the internet and social media in general. There is existence in what they referred to as a "Facebook addiction disorder." There are some of the factors which were found to be much is some of the people who continuously use social media such as tolerance neglect of their personal life and lastly addictive Behaviour.
A continues to use social media has been associated with the triggers of unhappiness and less wellbeing. There was a study that was conducted in some few years ago that proved that the people who use Facebook have linked to some things such as being less moment-to-moment happiness and lastly they are less satisfied with their lives. The continued study indicated that when people are using social media more the more they two variables are becoming more and more evident (Walton, 2017). The scholars had the conclusion that the continued use of social media directed them to become more and more isolated in such a manner that some other solitary activities do not.
Conclusion
In conclusion, social media is a beautiful thing that came along with the new era of things that connects people. However, people should be very careful with how they are using social media such that they should ensure that they are taking precautions in the manner in which they approach it. There are a lot of negative impacts that have been associated with social media that people and especially the teenagers should take heed of, people are being harmed online through cyberbullying, and the posting of pictures of use of illegal drugs to create attention can lead them to be caught or investigated.
