Introduction
Hello everyone, thank you for your interest in learning more about security. Let's start with a simple question, what is security? Security goes beyond basic human protection. It covers your property, your health and best of all, your finances. How much money should you invest in security, how much time should be spent protecting your property? I am sure that you have no direct answer to the asked questions. By the end of this, you should be able to scribble down a favorable response to the questions. This is because more insight will be provided on issues such as developing a strong working relationship with various entities, loss prevention, investigation, administration, and essential managerial skills to ensure general security.
What Are The Current Issues That Security Directors Face?
As a security director, one has to undergo extreme training. Sadeghi et al., (2015) show that training comprises of everyday issues such as cybersecurity, active shootout, drug trafficking or even fires. Reaction procedures must be at your fingertips to enable you to handle the situation correctively. In recent years, there have been active cases of shooting or even advanced methods of trafficking drugs. Sadeghi et al., (2015) recommend that the security director must be updated on all techniques being used by criminals
Chhetri et al., (2017) suggest that besides extreme training, security directors should use monitoring equipment effectively. Otherwise, the equipment's will be of no use to them. It is essential to understand that properly monitored cameras help ensure round the clock surveillance of all areas in a building. On the other hand, Cameras cannot respond to issues that arise. Creating a link between cameras and respondent teams remains to be a challenge to security directors.
Furthermore, keeping pace with the current technology is a threat to security personnel. In work titled "Security and privacy challenges in industrial internet of things" by Sadeghi et al., (2015), it is evident that criminals may employ sophisticated technology to commit a crime. Therefore make an arrest quite difficult and threaten security livelihood. A technology like signal blockers may make it hard to track a stolen vehicle. Furthermore, criminals are making use to technology to commit a crime across borders, creating a hard time for security personnel to crack the issue.
Sadeghi et al., (2015) show that cyber threats are a new challenge that is proving hard to solve; cyber threats keep mutating at an alarming rate. The issue worsens since it can be done across the globe and quite anonymously. Even though the security director may view the issue as an IT related concern, failure to protect the physical premises or the communication channel may play a role in increasing the risk of cyber threats. Security personnel has to undergo basic training on enhancing cyber security.
Professional Responsibilities of a Security Director
Professional responsibilities mandate the security director to be professionally liable for any issue that may happen under their watch. Loss prevention remains to be the biggest challenge and responsibility. As a director, there is a need to have a schedule for all your personnel that will prevent loss of property and personal body injury. It is essential to note that the director carries the blame for the loss of property within the vicinity.
As a security director, it is important to know that investigations on loss must always be done promptly and accurately. The use of various tools which are at the manager's disposal such as security cameras must be done. In extreme cases, there is a need to engage the local law enforcement agencies when it is evident that investigations may turn futile.
Administration and managerial task remains to be the professional responsibilities of a director. Since they have various personnel under them, it becomes essential that they can take responsibility for the actions done by the juniors. Late reporting to work, payment of bonuses and even fines for workplace misbehavior are some of the tasks that must be performed effectively. Helping the juniors strike a balance between work and leisure and the creation of a work environment that will enhance this remains to be a top priority in the management duties of a security director.
What Skills Should Security Directors Have?
Being a security director requires a combination of skills. To be successful, one has to be a good decision maker. As per Githae et al., (2018), different security scenarios emerge every day, and they may call for immediate reactions. The outcome will be based on how good the decision made will be. Furthermore, a good director should be able to handle disasters. Emergencies call for quick decisions and the ability to multitask. To ensure that one is effective at all times, there is a need to hone their ability to make quick decisions, control disasters and multitask.
A look at the ASIS International website (2019) reveal that being good at organizing helps to enhance personal career and growth; a good organizer should be able to know who will handle essential tasks in an organization. Effective organizational skills help to grow the passion for the job and help overcome fear and challenges that may arise in the course of the work. Due to the risk associated with the job, it is essential for a director to organize and create strategies on how different issues can be solved.
Importance of Strong Internal and External Relationships
Having strong relationships helps to increase the sources of recommendation. Due to the fragile nature of the job, it is essential that one gets the best recommendations on issues such as best security gadgets, best response strategy or even the latest security threats. Strong relation with other directors will help gain insight from peers, therefore becoming much effective.
Githae et al., (2018) state that well-cultured relations are essential for personal advancements. Besides the opportunity to advance your career field, it becomes possible to advance the techniques used, the employment pattern and the background checking techniques. There is tough competition between the various security companies and being the best is no option. Having essential relationships will go a long way in perfecting your workings. Additionally, relationships help to create more business opportunities. A firm is likely to get referrals based on the networks of the management. More networks mean more referrals and therefore great business opportunity.
Based on the nature of the job, there is a need to seek advice. Contacts within the industry may not always provide the best advice on how to handle issues. For instance, the risk of cyber threat may be facilitated by poor security measures within a premise. Having experts in IT who can best advice on how to handle such risk is essential in the ultimate success of every director, being social will go a long way in creating the desired social connection.
Closing Remarks
The issues around security are quite dynamic; there is no ultimate solution to them. However, the threats posed can always be mitigated. To be successful, there is a need for the security director to have the right understanding of the current issues facing them, to understand their professional liabilities, regularly update their skills on essential issues and also create a relation with other stakeholders. Such is the recipe for making a successful director. I am glad that you took your time to listen to me, and I also believe that you learned something. If you have any question or clarification that you seek, you can raise it now, thank you for your time.
