It was the day she was supposed to board a plane to go and see his sick uncle in Ontario, Canada. After boarding the plane, Joe adjusted his seat and leaned backward. Other passengers were coming in on the plane as well. He looked around and all he could see were ecstatic faces of the passengers. To him, the plane was no joyride. He was already stressed out and worried about the health of his uncle. The plane landed. Joe went to book a hotel and headed to the hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Joes was welcomed by the bad smell of medicine. He looked around. He was looking for who to ask for help because the reception desk was empty. People were running here and there. Nurses and doctors appeared busy. Some were rushing patients to the emergency room while others were busy talking to the patient's families. Most of the faces that h could see at the hospital were sad. Then a female nurse was walking around and Joe decided to ask for help. "Hi." Joe said. "Kindly direct me to the general ward." He added. The nurse told him to go straight then turn right and he will see the sign indicating the general ward.
Inside the ward, patients were lying there in silence. They were helpless. Some of them had bandages on their arms, legs, and face. Those who did not have bandages appeared to be in excruciating pain. Some patients were asleep. There were nurses at the ward attending to the patients. "I pray that God will heal them soon" Joe murmured in his breath.
Suddenly, he saw his uncle. He was not in good shape. He fell and knocked his head on the floor. He has an immense headache. Doctors and nurses were trying their best to ensure his recovery. "Uncle Tom, how are you feeling?" Joe asked. "I bit better than yesterday." "Thank you for coming." After talking for a while, visiting hours were over and Joe had to leave to return the following day with the rest of the family.
The next morning, Joe rushed to the hospital. There he saw his aunt Lisa, Tom's wife, and her three children. The looks on their faces showed sadness. "Joe, Tom...your uncle is no more." He, he died today at 4.00 am." Joe was silent for about a minute. "How, he told me he was feeling fine yesterday when we talked," Joe said, with tears running down his face. His aunt Lisa told him that an autopsy would be performed to establish the cause of his death. "I need to see him." I want to see him." Joe yelled. "After the autopsy, we will be allowed to view his body, Joe." Aunt Lisa told him. Aunt Lisa was disheveled. Not to mention, her kids, who were there with her could not control their sadness and tears that their father was no more. The autopsy was t be conducted in the afternoon. Joe, Lisa, the kids, and other friends of the family who had now come to the hospital were there when the pathologist told them that Tom had died due to a blood clot on his brain that resulted after the fall. They went home to plan for the funeral.
Back at Lisa's house, the atmosphere was serene. No one was talking. Particularly, John was mostly silent. He feared that when he talked, he would break down. Lisa's sister decided to go to the study room to retrieve the photo album. She gave one of them to Joe. He perused through the album. In there were photos of him when he was young and still living with his uncle and aunt. At least, John could find a reason to smile. This time, the kids were in the room asleep. After a while, Lisa informed the family and friends of the date and day of the burial.
On the day of the burial, many family and friends attended. In the cemetery, about three families were present burying their loved ones. Mourners cried uncontrollably. They took their seats as the preacher read from the scriptures. At this time, Joe was still crying. One of the family friends tapped Joe on the shoulder and said to him, "Look around, people die every day, today was your uncle's turn...soon...you will get over it." Joe did not care to respond. All he could think of was his uncle's death. After the laying their uncle to rest, the friends and family returned to Lisa's house.
Back at Lisa's house, sadness filled the air. The kids were so traumatized, but Lisa had to compose herself for the sake of the kids. Lisa went into the bedroom and retrieved a watch. She gave it to Joe. Joe was elated because he had something that could remind him of his uncle. She told him that his Uncle wanted him to have it after he passed on. Joe wanted to have some time for himself. He went back to the hotel.
Joe goes back to his hotel. He looks around. He lay on the bed and began to think about his uncle, Tom. He said out loud, "there is no way he is dead." No...no...who am I going to call whenever I need advice? "I know...I am sure that I will see him again." In the hotel room, Joe hears nothing but silence. Never before has he heard complete silence in his surroundings.
Joe pulled himself out of the grief he was going through and cemented himself to the reality. "Life must go on." He said to himself. Even though it was painful for him because he would lack someone to talk to and seek fatherly advice, he knew that time would heal all his pain. He was afraid that upon his return to New York, he would be unable to enjoy anything he did because thought about his uncle's death. He was worried about whether he would manage to make conscious life decisions. He pulled out his uncle's watch from his backpack and stared at it for some time. He reminisced - about the time when his parents died, and his uncle helped him to overcome the grief. He reminisced - about the time he was living with his uncle before he moved out to live in New York. "He was the only father figure I knew," Joe said to himself. In his mind, he knows that he has to pull himself together to manage to move forward in life.
In the plane back to New York, John knew that his journey would be long and he would finally find peace when he gets there.
