To my understanding, communication is the process of sharing information by using symbols. It is the universal human activity but is also one of the most distinctive processes. That is to say, every human has a distinct identity towards their way of communication, and this could affect their relationship with others either negatively or positively as well as how they understand and receive messages. This essay will demonstrate my communication identity and how it affects my interactions.
After carrying out an individual orientation on the communication competence scale, I realized that my communication is more efficient when in an online setting, simply because I can portray self-disclosure effectively in writing than in a one-on-one interaction. This preference on communication affects my interaction with people since I cannot know what is on my recipient's end, or their form of culture and social identity. Unlike in face-to-face communication where one can interpret and initiate the individuals culture and be able to embrace them.
Language is a combination of symbols which express ideas enable me to think and communicate with other people either nonverbally or verbally. Through language, I can share knowledge, feelings, and experiences with everyone else around me. Language helps me to reinforce my perceptions about ethnicity and race and hence be in a position of indiscriminating the inferiority of certain groups. By using language, I can create visual images, and understand diverse cultures thus upholding societal cohesion. Interpersonal attraction takes place when two individuals are in proximity to each other and are in a position of freely responding to each other's desires by expressing ideas, feelings, and thoughts. I have had interpersonal attractions on some occasions mostly with close family members and friends since I can comfortably communicate with them.
The use of slangs and jargons are meant to reinforce or establish cohesiveness or social identity in a group or the whole society. In my peer group we tend to use certain code phrases and words such that if you happen to know the group jargon or slang, then you are identified as a member but I you do not know it then you cannot belong to the group. Poor communication is an inexorable cause of stress. An area of communication in which many people are poor at is listening. I often feel obliged to talk a lot and give little chance to another person while communicating and this has greatly affected my communication with friends thus leading to miscommunications of messages as I care less to listen.
Abstract languages can result in certain issues such as stereotyping. For example, when we say men care less about relationships. Such claims ignore the fact that abstract language is too general and it describes more than what is meant. For effective communication, I use abstract language less to avoid confusing others and miscommunications. Social media is commoditized settings whereby stereotyping certain forms of self-exposure by ladies are indications of popularity and social success. The risks of facing gender stereotypes are discriminating on what girls post on their social media accounts. With this culture, I am sensitive on what I communicate through social media and post only relevant and use nonsexist words such as 'humanity' instead of 'mankind or women' thus being indiscriminating on gender.
Conclusion
Concludingly, it is easier for me to pass my message to a huge number of individuals through an online setting since I would not have to deal with my anxiety issues. By comprehending language and understanding other people's culture, I can communicate effectively, be indiscriminate, and identify with my peers by using jargons.
