Choose four specific stakeholder organizations and write their slogans or mission statements.

The mission statement for The Federation for American Immigration Reform is; "to reduce overall immigration to a more normal level" (FAIR, 2018). The organization envisions bringing down the number of legal immigrants into the US from the present figures of one million and above to 300,000, allowing the country to manage development, tackle environmental issues, and sustain a superior overall quality of life.

The vision statement for the National Immigration Forum is putting in place "a 21st-century immigration system that helps new Americans gain the opportunities, skills, and status they need to realize their full potential" (National Immigration Forum, 2018).

The slogan of the Center for Immigration Studies is "Low-immigration, Pro-immigrant", with a mission statement of attaining "far lower immigration numbers and producing research to further those views" (Murray, 2016).

The mission statement for the United States Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) is "to protect America from the cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security and public safety" (ICE, 2018).

Analyze two stakeholder organizations that seem to have conflicting viewpoints on your topic.

Among all stakeholders in the immigration issue in America, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and the National Immigration Forum (NIF) appear to have the most divergent view on immigration. While the Federation for American Immigration Reform seeks to bring down the overall number of foreigners entering the country, the National Immigration Forum aims to enact an immigration system that will help immigrants flourish in America (Nowrasteh, 1; Migration Policy Institute, 20). While the NIF is a progressive organization that promotes pro-immigration laws like the DREAM Act, the FAIR is a conservative organization opposed to all pro-immigration policies. The FAIR and NIF are publicly opposed to each other's view. The FAIR maintains that legal and illegal immigration depreciates the quality of life for Americans, arguing that immigration is responsible for reducing wages for hardworking Americans (Nowrasteh, 3). The NIF, on the other hand, promotes the narrative that immigrants contribute positively to the economy and cultural wealth of America (MPI, 21).

What do the FAIR and the NIF have in common? Describe the goals or values that the organizations share.

The core aim of both of these organizations is to improve immigration policy for the betterment of America. While their policies and principles differ, the FAIR and NIF both believe in improving immigration policies as a means of improving the lives of all Americans. Both organizations share the values of nationalism, only differing in how immigration affects American nationalism.

Describe a part of your topic that they could both agree on-that's your common ground.

The FAIR and NIF could both agree that the quality of life of all Americans is of utmost importance. With this, a harmonization of the strategies can be achieved.

What would each stakeholder organization have to contribute to reaching this compromise?

The fact that the FAIR recognizes the need for immigrants in the US, giving the acceptable number at 300,000 per year, means that they could be open to a compromise (FAIR, 2018). The NIF focuses on improving the experiences of immigrants in America, which means that they can be persuaded to overlook the quantity for quality (NIF, 2018). The FAIR would have to relent and allow their accepted number of immigrants to the US per year to reach, say 500,000, while the NIF will have to acquiesce on welcoming as many people as possible and focus on bringing in a smaller number of people who can be of greater value to the country.

What needs to happen to accomplish your compromise?

The Federation for American Immigration Reform needs to recognize the huge contribution of immigrants to the economy and be more supportive of their inculcation in the American economic system. On the other hand, the NIF also needs to recognize some of the challenges associated with excessive immigration, which includes saturating the unskilled labor force and bringing wages down (Card, Dustmann & Preston 6).

A compromise to reduce the number of immigrants by a certain margin will allow the two organizations to fulfill their objectives even better because they will not be opposing each other and countering each other's efforts.

Essay

Immigrants constitute a sizeable portion of the population of America, with over 10% of Americans being foreigners dwelling in the country. While the high levels of immigration create cultural and economic diversity, it also creates a burden on social services like healthcare, water, and natural resources. The public is divided on the issue, with some opposing and some supporting higher immigration rates (Hainmueller & Hopkins 2). In the US, the Federation for American Immigration Reform is one of those against immigration while the National Immigration Forum supports immigration. Both organizations cite quality of life as the reason for their respective stance on immigration. In this essay, we propose reducing immigration by a margin that will ensure that fewer people enter the country (500,000-700,000 from the current 1,000,000) and enjoy a higher quality of life.

For the FAIR and the NIF to come to an agreement on their missions and start working together, a few matters will have to be settled. For example, the view that immigrants reduce the quality of labor and bring down wages has been invalidated by many studies (Hainmueller & Hopkins 17). Studies also support that immigrants actually support the economies of states along the Mexican border such as Texas, with a positive deficit between their contribution to the economy in taxes and the number of amenities spent on them (Wilson 148). The National Immigration Forum will have to accept that some of the arguments made by the FAIR are valid and need to be addressed, especially on the effects of illegal immigrants, who often unwittingly act as a pipeline for the smuggling of drugs into the country (Rivera 15).
